The world still used typewriters and film when I was in school. But computers were in the public imagination and programming was taking off. Then schoolmates started using HPC calculators to get an edge, and I jumped on that bandwagon. One night I coded up two things I thought might be on the test.

Both were. I got a better grade. Programming was no longer just an abstraction. I got a summer job at Garrett Turbine Engine. A paperwork accident put me in the programming group instead of mechanical design. That would have bothered some of my fellow mechanical engineering students.

The code was full of tricks to make it run on an old Cyber mainframe. I had to rewrite it to take out the tricks. The programmers were laid back. Some of them came in at noon and worked into the evening. That suited me. It was a good job and a good summer in my life.

Sure, I decided. Why not? I just said yes. Process instrumentation was DCS. I landed in the pulp-and-paper-industry group. So, by accident or fate, I was now a DCS programmer.

Call this advice. The first would be to pay more attention to learning the process. And paper mills. You hustle to get the hang of it and start writing a program. I wanted to leave work at 5 PM and do other things. You should, too. But I recommend you study the process more than the minimum needed just to write the program. The second thing is to learn more about the hardware and instrumentation. I barely saw the panels, and I learned little about the hardware.

I learned how to develop sequential logic and PID control strategies. I thrived and enjoyed life, too. But get out in the plant, and get your nose in as much stuff as you can.

One control strategy we used was quite innovative. It combined techniques for controlling a large and small control valve. One valve had a large range, but course resolution and the other valve had fine resolution but a small range. There were some simple control strategies to control two valves that were developed before DCS.

Our hybrid strategy combined the best features of those control strategies. It is in wide use today. The engineer who invented it was mentoring me. He started on his idea pre-DCS when controls were still hard to configure for anything complicated. There were all kinds of rewiring and other hoops. Distributed control systems and programmable logic controllers were transformative. You could do anything. All you needed was a good programmer who could be taught the control strategy.

Lots of coffee, pizza and candy bars—programmer style. Most automation and controls guys know some of that. Luckily, I had good techs available. Their disappointment was offset by the fact that my code worked well. The techs liked the code because it was structured and commented. I did that because it helped me to revise and reuse my own code. But it was always well received by techs and others.

Write helpful notes, not a rehash of the code. Explain the roles and purposes. I sometimes outline the architecture in a few rung comments at the top of the main PLC program. Your system might not get replaced in five years if they can figure out how to work on it.

I know because I worked at a place where our big moneymaker was replacing systems. Sometimes a system was replaced because no one could work on the code. Another nice thing to do with comments is to explain parameters, drive settings, and network settings, especially if you sweat blood to figure them out. You will be doing people a favor and adding value. Just after I mastered Allen-Bradley programming, my personal life threw me some curves.

These patients need to be identified at the earliest opportunity and their concerns addressed. Fear and anxiety toward the dentist and dental treatment are both significant characteristics that contribute to avoidance of dental care.

It has been cited as the fifth-most common cause of anxiety by Agras et al. It is normally experienced in day-to-day life, such as during exams, while making crucial decisions, in the workplace, and in several other circumstances.

Fear is a reaction to a known or perceived threat or danger. It leads to a fight-or-flight situation. Dental fear is a reaction to threatening stimuli in dental situations. Phobia is persistent, unrealistic, and intense fear of a specific stimulus, leading to complete avoidance of the perceived danger.

Both dental anxiety and fear evoke physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses in an individual. This is a frequently encountered problem in dental offices. Anxiety is often closely linked to painful stimulus and increased pain perception, and thus these patients experience more pain that lasts longer; moreover, they also exaggerate their memory of pain. Objective measures involve assessment of blood pressure, pulse rate, pulse oximetry, finger temperature, and galvanic skin response. An extremely accurate objective method used in various studies to measure dental anxiety is galvanic skin response.

Aromatherapy is an alternative treatment approach, wherein essential oils of aromatic plants are used to produce positive physiological or pharmacological effects through the sense of smell. Inhalation of pleasant scents such as essential oils has an anxiolytic effect and improves mood.

It was the first scene of Indian cruelty my young eyes had ever witnessed, and I wondered how even savages could possess such relentless minds as to wish to bathe their hands in the blood of little innocents against whom they could have no cause of quarrel.

This was at Portage de Soix, twenty-five miles above St. Louis, and about two miles from my father's house; and their intention was to cut off all the white inhabitants of the surrounding country.

The alarm was given; a large party of the settlers collected, crossed the river, and after a severe engagement defeated the Indians with great loss, and frustrated their bloody purposes. Three days after this battle, a woman came into the settlement who had been three years captive among the Indians. She had made her escape during the confusion attending their defeat, and reached her friends in safety, after they had long supposed her dead.

The name of this woman I do not remember, but I have no doubt there are old settlers in that region who yet recollect the circumstance, and the general rejoicing with which her escape was celebrated. Hierarchies are being replaced by cross unit organizational groupings with fewer layers and more decentralized decision making.

Blurred boundaries —As organizations become more laterally structured, boundaries begin to breakdown as different parts of the organization need to work more effectively together.

Time to read and attend training classes is no longer a perquisite of only a few, it is essential for all workers. Different ways of thinking —Rosabeth Kantor argues that cross-functional and cross boundary teams require "kaleidoscope thinking," the ability to see alternative angles and perspectives and to create new patterns of thinking that propel innovation.

Workers also need to be able to synthesize disparate ideas in order to make the cognitive leaps that underlie innovation. Vastly increased access to information has made work both easier and more difficult. The ease comes from ability to rapidly locate and download information from diverse web sites.

The difficulty comes with the need to consume and make sense of new information in a timely fashion. Information overload, coupled with time pressures and increased work complexity, lead to what psychologists call "cognitive overload syndrome COS. Reduced loyalty and commitment —With little expectation for advancement, workers feel less committed to organizational goals and more committed to their own learning and development. The knowledge and technological skills that employees bring with them to the workplace are transportable and are not lost when a new job is taken. Increased time burdens —Years of downsizing and outsourcing have produced what Lesie Perlow calls a "time famine"—the feeling of having too much to do and too little time to do it.

In order to keep up with workloads, many workers are spending longer hours at work, according to reports by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Center for Workforce Development. Those with flex hours have limited freedom regarding when and where to work. The vast majority of workers have to commit to a specific day to work at home or a specific day to take off if they work fourhour days.
