Reward strong business managers

Much like preparing your CV, Bachelor and language certificates, the motivation letter is an integral component of modern application requirements. And while it feels like it is more relatable to the world of jobs, reality shows that a large proportion of Masters admissions depend on the content of your motivation letter. As challenging as it sounds, the preparation of this type of documentary can be enjoyable — especially if you think of it as a short but clear advertisement about yourself. Also, there is no real need to be a dab hand at writing either, but rather in possession of some good language and styling skills. Ready to become subject to marketing?

Organizational Structure Types for Project Managers

Managers from various business units assign staff to specific projects in a matrix organization. Because projects could include participation from several business units, the project manager has little authority over the staff assigned to his projects. For organizations that are heavily focused on project management, one project manager often oversees all the organization's projects. Whether it's a marketing project or project designed for manufacturing, human resources or finance, one project manager orchestrates it.

Project Management-Focused For organizations that are heavily focused on project management, one project manager often oversees all the organization's projects. Functional Project managers in functional organizational structures may have several counterparts in the company's various business units.

The project-based model of organizing is widespread in traditional manufacturing industry but also employed in other industries by both public and private organizations such as consultancy firms, marketing and film industry. It is especially suitable for complex, innovative high-technology and high-value new-product development and business-to-business projects in rapidly changing environments. But not that well suited for more stable markets and mass production, where specialization along functional lines leads to advantages of scale, learning and marketing. As academic collaborations become increasingly virtual and geographically widespread, researchers are faced with novel challenges, as well as opportunities, as they attempt to create equitable, effective research partnerships. In this essay, the authors highlight the importance of shared reflexive conversations in building a strong foundation for collaboration and the coproduction of knowledge, particularly in the midst of ongoing crises.

In so doing, they reflect on their experience of planning research on social innovation in small-scale fishing communities in Africa and Asia, as a team spread across six countries.

The beauty of collaborative research is that it provides adequate space for each participating actor to engage in a collective reflection on their part in the coproduction of knowledge. This essay is an outcome of such a collective engagement, where shared conversations enabled the project team to co-design a research framework to explore the nature of transformative social innovation initiatives and the nature of the governance that small-scale fishing communities envisioned.

Subject fields of team members included philosophy, applied ethics, social sciences, development studies, gender studies, geography and environmental management, policy studies, natural resource governance, and sustainable livelihoods.

Between August and August , we worked together in preparing the research agenda for this transregional collaborative research project. Regardless of background, we all wanted to engage with theoretical discourses such as governance and governmentality, gender relations, transformative social innovation, and so on, in the context of blue growth-based development processes happening in the Indian Ocean region as well as exploring the nature of these discourses embedded in the everyday livelihood practices and struggles of small-scale fishers.

After several project meetings, gradually, we began to realize that the Indian Ocean region as a research site, though extremely complex, could also enable us to weave our perspectives together, focusing on distinct subregions. Some of the lines of inquiry that guided our journey, in the beginning, were:. During our initial dialogue sessions, it was evident that all of us believed in pursuing ethical collaboration.

We knew that it would be challenging to coordinate the whole project across different time zones without much face-to-face interaction. In addition, there were our everyday family and work commitments, which had become even more complex with the Covid pandemic, lockdowns, and work-from-home circumstances. The month research planning time was noticeably short and the resources that we could make use of amidst such chaos were also limited. All of us were uncertain about how our fields and fieldwork were going to evolve.

However, as the days progressed, each one of us began to gradually set into the whole dialogic and designing process of the project. In that sense, we were able to carve out an inclusive space for all members to explore, articulate, and integrate our respective research ideas and contexts into practice. While in-person meetings would have been better, they never were a viable option in a pandemic-ridden world. Online meetings were held in such a way that they did not become a burden for any of us in terms of time and other everyday commitments.

We also discussed holding online meetings and reached an understanding to be flexible, where each one of us was ready to give and adjust. For instance, a team member based in Halifax, Canada, had to wake up very early in the mornings whereas members from India, Bangladesh, and Thailand had to stay up very late evenings to participate in scheduled Zoom meetings.

Whenever possible, we were able to extend the space for responsive and respectful engagement with other stakeholders too. These actors include representatives from the fishing communities, government officials, NGO staff, trade union leaders, other academics who displayed keen interest in the project, research associates, students, and the funders. The pandemic complicated outreach to the communities physically, especially in Bangladesh, India, Madagascar, South Africa, and Thailand where lockdown measures were strictly implemented.

This was at least partially possible through critical dialogue and meticulous engagement with the literature on oceanic resources and livelihood practices of small-scale fishers, fisheries governance frameworks and instruments, and the blue growth or blue economy strategies designed and implemented in countries of the region. What facilitated the development of a shared understanding was the willingness of each one of us to distribute relevant literature and documents to others, irrespective of the fact that finding them, sourcing them, and sending them was time-consuming and challenging work.

However, the need for further research and critical reflections to capture the complexities of the Indian Ocean and the social transformations happening in these spaces continue to trigger our aspiration to bond together in order to reimagine and co-construct the idea of the Indian Ocean and its fisher people.

We held several discussions to unpack and deconstruct what we mean by transformative social innovation, governance, and governmentality and arrived together at the criteria for selecting suitable case studies for future research.

In the literature, initiatives that qualify as transformative social innovations must have 1 acted toward the satisfaction of the unfulfilled needs, 2 provoked changes in governance, and 3 fostered empowerment of the people involved. Frank Moulaert et al. Edward Elgar Publishing, , We were guided by these criteria in searching for and selecting cases of community-led transformative social innovation initiatives in our respective countries.

A crucial phase was to agree upon a suitable methodology for our collaborative research. At the center of the phronesis approach are four value-rational questions to facilitate inquiries, analyses, and interpretations of values, power, and interests underlying specific instances of human actions.

However, we need to remain prepared and continue to be caring, compassionate, and empathetic to pursue meaningful collaborative research in such emergent situations. The whole journey was also an engagement with our own positionalities, and quickly realizing that we were able to navigate across the barriers of insiders and outsiders in this co-creative space.

In the construction industry it is important to know what a management plan is, how it works in action and the benefits of having one when undertaking any building project. Undertaking a construction project of any size is often a daunting prospect for clients unfamiliar with the complex requirements of the contemporary, statutory and construction environment. The Construction Management Plan can also act as a gateway to detailed technical information. The Construction Management Plan is an iterative document which can be updated and augmented as project parameters alter during the pre-construction, construction and post-construction phases of the project as new information is uncovered which is required to be factored into each stage of the process. Appropriate details from the Construction Phase Plan will be incorporated into the Construction Management Plan at an appropriate iteration of the document as a whole. The following subject areas may be included in the Construction Management Plan. Whilst not exhaustive, the scope of items for inclusion will depend on the nature, context and complexity of the project. The Project Overview will set the context for the requirement of the project and define principal aims.

Learn how to answer system design questions with in-depth video examples and fundamental concepts. As you can see from our top 30 list, engineering manager interviews fall into two broad categories: behavioral and technical. However, there are many sub-categories within these groups you should have a solid grasp on before your EM interview.

First and foremost, engineering managers are managers and team leaders. The most efficient and productive teams are highly collaborative and proactive and function well within the larger corporate culture. Building and maintaining such groups falls upon the engineering manager position when it comes to the engineering department.

Unfortunately, many managers struggle with managing their team's performance without micro-managing or other alienating managerial behavior. Hiring managers know this, so they ask many performance management behavioral questions to evaluate your abilities. Performance management questions usually are of one of two categories:. The most successful candidates can demonstrate that they have experience monitoring and improving their team's performance over time.

Therefore, expect behavioral interview questions surrounding the recruitment and hiring process. Hiring managers often have the final say about who joins the company — a huge responsibility. Recruitment and hiring questions are designed to evaluate how you screen potential candidates, interview applicants, and present potential hires to upper management. The most successful answers to these questions can demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the distinct steps of the hiring funnel.

No team, engineering or otherwise, is an island. Each is a single part of a grander whole. As an engineering manager, you are the face and representative of that group to the full. It will be part of your responsibilities to interact with the product, design, and engineering teams involved in your team's day-to-day execution.

This kind of communication is often referred to as cross-functional collaboration. Because this kind of business communication can be much more complex and nuanced, EM candidates will be asked behavioral questions focused on cross-functional collaboration.

These are typically conversational interview questions where candidates have a deep discussion surrounding a technical project they have directly been involved with during their previous experience. While engineering management is obviously a manager role, it is still fundamentally a technical role. However, being an EM typically means your technical responsibilities will be a bigger picture than they were as a software engineer, for example. For the most successful strategic decision-making, you will need to know how distributed systems operate - how each individual component processes information, communicates, and scales.

Without such an understanding of the high-level view of the system design of your team's technical project, your ability to make decisions will be reactive at best. You should expect many system design questions like the ones we included in our list during the technical rounds of your EM interviews. We know that these questions can be very intimidating for many EM candidates.
