Special education preschool behavior management

Classroom Management Series

Like Sophia, when we taught kindergarten and preschool, we started the school year wondering how to create a behavior management system that would work for a wide variety of children. While many program- and school-wide models exist, early childhood teachers often struggle to find one that focuses on motivation.

Motivation is hugely important if we want to understand, engage, lead, and connect with young children. Specifically, motivation is key to effective behavior management in inclusive classrooms. Given that many teachers feel they are not well prepared to manage behaviors in a classroom Pavri , we have intentionally pursued this topic in our professional endeavors as teacher educators, observing hundreds of preservice and in-service teachers and providing professional development and instruction around the topic of motivation.

Self-determination theory is a conceptual framework for understanding human development. As the name suggests, it posits that development is an active process, taking place as individuals interact with the environment around them. Self-determination theory states that all individuals have both physiological and psychological needs that drive them.

When the environment fulfills those needs, the individual develops optimally. When the environment does not provide for those needs, one of two things can happen: either development will be restrained and sense of well-being reduced, or the individual will find maladaptive ways to fulfill the need. When this basic need is not met, children either experience malnutrition, which negatively impacts their cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development, or they resort to maladaptive ways to get food, like stealing it.

In this context, autonomy refers to agency and an internal locus of control. We all have a need to be in control of our lives and to resist being controlled by others. Relatedness refers to the drive to connect in a positive way with other people in our environments. Competence refers to the need not only to have an effect on the world around us but also to succeed in the tasks we undertake.

For behavior management in classrooms, self-determination theory calls into question programs that use external rewards and punishments e. That is, we are controlling them rather than allowing them to control themselves. When children feel controlled by others rather than feeling in control of themselves, they will either experience decreased well-being e. Many teachers find ways to share autonomy with their students.

For example, teachers may give children choices regarding what learning station they might want to engage in first. The teacher maintains control over the tasks the child must complete, and the children feel they have some control because they choose which station to go to first. Consistently offering choices like this fosters a sense of autonomy, which in turn curbs the emergence of maladaptive behaviors, like when a child goes to the block center but throws the blocks instead of building with them.

Using rewards or punishments changes the fundamental, underlying nature of the educational relationship. In most classrooms, the relationships between teachers and children are social i. Throughout the school year, teachers often use their personal relationships to motivate students to comply with requests—children are internally motivated because they care about their teachers and they know their teachers care about them.

Just as we want children to have a sense of autonomy when making choices, we also want them to have a sense of ownership over their accomplishments. For example, there is typically a period of time between when a child uses only drawings to tell a story and when he feels competent enough to add letters to represent what he wants to say. As an emergent writer, the child is no longer satisfied with the drawing telling the story—but his feeling of competence as a writer is not yet strong.

These budding feelings of competence may be subject to change if Sophia were to start awarding stickers for a job well done. The child might no longer be concerned about what he finds to be good enough, but instead wonder how Sophia will respond: Is it not my best work because I did not add words or because the teacher did not give me a sticker? Or conversely, Is it my best work because the teacher said it was?

Children need to know that we love and care for them regardless of what happens on a day to day basis. We saw this in action in a first grade classroom we visited last year. The teacher, Hailey, had cultivated a large classroom library, which she had initially organized into carefully labeled tubs. However, the books were constantly being misplaced, which caused concern among the children when they could not find their favorite books quickly.

By recognizing that we are in control of how we feel Bailey , no child can make us feel any way other than the way we want to. It may take some practice, but if we wish to be calm and composed, that is entirely within our power.

By remaining calm, we can take the opportunity to respond to challenging situations in a caring and sensitive manner. We can teach children behavior the same way we teach them reading, writing, math, or science. When we do this in a way that is respectful and responsive, we show children that we care about them and want to help them become better people—thereby fulfilling their need for relatedness.

Next, she could talk with Kevin about what is happening before he hits someone and how he feels in that moment. Sophia could then provide strategies to help him calm down or act on his feelings in a more appropriate way, scaffolding his social and emotional understanding to help him learn new behaviors.

Illinois Wesleyan University provides significant support for students to achieve academic success. In order to be successful in college, students need to learn how to best study, manage their time, and utilize the resources available to them.

Attending college for the first time is an exciting, yet daunting, prospect. College students have a lot more freedom than high school students, which means they can make their own decisions. This is a double-edged sword, as many new college students are not used to taking responsibility for their daily schedules and their academic achievements. Developing good study skills is one of the best ways to achieve success in college and create a bright outlook for the future. Developing good writing skills and learning how to take tests will help college students get the best grades possible, improving their chances of winning scholarships or getting hired for good jobs immediately after graduation. Success in college also depends on good time management.

History of the Textile Industry The textile industry is one of the oldest in the world. The oldest known textiles, which date back to about B. The industry was primarily a family and domestic one until the early part of the s when the first factory system was established. It wasn't until the Industrial Revolution in England, in the 18th century, that power machines for spinning and weaving were invented. In when Richard Arkwright's spinning frame with variable speed rollers was patented, water power replaced manual power Neefus, In the early 17th century of colonial America, textiles were primarily manufactured in New England homes.

In addition, segments of the textile industry have become highly automated and computerized ATMI, a.

The textile industry is characterized by product specialization. Most mills only engage in one process or raw material. For example, a mill may be engaged in either broadloom weaving of cotton or broadloom weaving of wool. Similarly, many mills specialize in either spinning or weaving operations, although larger integrated mills may combine the two operations.

And below we've selected over 75 example questions that you can practice with. Let's start with the most common type of questions: behavioral. Program managers are the glue between product, design, marketing, engineering, etc. They need to be able to communicate clearly, work well with others, and resolve project issues before or after they arise. Your ability to perform these functions will be assessed using behavioral interview questions. Be prepared to talk about your top accomplishments, situations where you've resolved conflict, and your motivation for applying to the specific company and role.

You'll notice that we've grouped these questions into a few sub-categories. You don't need to memorize these groupings, but it should be a helpful way for you to structure your preparation. If you can give a good answer for at least one question from each area, that will give you a good start with your preparation. After you've done that, you can continue preparing by practicing answers to additional questions. The second most frequently asked type of question on program manager interviews are questions focusing on program management processes and skills.

Depending on your specific role or functional area, the day-to-day program manager responsibilities can vary significantly. Sometimes you might work at the program level i.

As you can see, each category has some sub-categories within it. But don't worry, they're actually fairly easy to remember when you understand what each category represents. If you're familiar with project management, you may notice that the 5 categories listed under program management processes are roughly aligned with the PMBOK project management process groups. For our purposes, essentially all this means is that "process" questions are aligned with the lifecycle of a project e.

As we mentioned, each of the process questions you'll face in your program management interviews can be roughly connected to each stage of a project's lifecycle. Below, we've provided example interview questions for each of these project processes. We'd encourage you to practice answering at least one question from each sub-category.

The next skill question we'd like to cover is partnership questions. Similar to leadership questions, the format of these questions will look similar to behavioral questions. But the primary focus for partnership questions is to evaluate your ability to work with a variety of stakeholders to move programs and projects forward.

To do this, you'll need to build and maintain good working relationships, and you'll need to be able to influence other people's priorities without direct authority over them. Practicing the below questions will help you prepare for your interviews and they'll also help you get a clearer sense of the environment that program managers operate within. Estimation questions are a bit different than the others, as they will test your logic and mental math skills.

You may get an estimation question that is relevant to your role or industry, or you might get a question on a seemingly random topic, like pizza. Regardless of the subject of the question, you'll need to show that you can break down the question into logical pieces and come to a reasonable conclusion. To learn a step-by-step method for solving this type of question, we'd recommend reading our separate guide on estimation questions note: this guide is written for product managers, but the contents will still be relevant for this type of question.

Then you can practice with the example questions below. Finally, there are a few other types of questions that get asked in program manager interviews. These remaining questions are asked infrequently enough that we decided to bundle them all together in this final skill category.

Below, you'll find questions about prioritization, brain teasers, and questions about general program management experience and knowledge. For the prioritization questions, you'll need to show that you can balance competing priorities and make well-informed decisions. The brain teasers can be tough, and may seem completely unrelated to the role, but they are usually intended to test your cognitive and problem solving skills, which can definitely help you as a program manager.

However, not all program manager jobs are the same, so you should also do your homework on the job description and any other details about the role that you can find. You'll want to be prepared to speak knowledgeably about the functional area where you'd be working. If your role would be in a technical area, or if you'd be working closely with engineers, then your interviewers may also decide to ask you a few technical questions to evaluate your depth of knowledge and your ability to communicate about technical details.
