Not all project managers are equal either, and assuming so will also get PMOs, along with the business portfolio that they represent, in real trouble fast. Think of it this way. If you need to get from point A to point B, where A is your home and B is the local pub, then grabbing a lift from your friend will be fine, assuming sensible drinking or the friend acts as the designated drive that he or she is. Now think of getting from one side of a city, say London, to the other. Would you still want your friend to drive you or would getting a taxi be a better option?

What is a Project Management Office? A Complete Guide to PMOs

In any organization, a PMO is a department responsible for improving project management by improving efficiencies. PMO creates and maintains documents, tracks progress, and offers education on matters about a project. Project management offices are also tasked with reporting project performance to the upper management and stakeholders, prioritizing activities, and ensuring all projects align with organizational objectives.

This enhances organizational culture. Transparency: A PMO offers accurate and relevant information about projects to support organizational decision-making. By doing so, a PMO ensures transparency and accountability. Support: PMOs are typically created to facilitate project execution.

This is mainly done by helping project teams, facilitating effective implementation of strategies, training employees, and monitoring progress.

As mentioned earlier the literal definition of PMO — is the project management office. In any business organization they are the department that handles all aspects of a formal project management process and ensures that a projects life cycle is tracked from start to finish so that efficiencies can be best optimized.

The PMO may also control how strategies are applied by outlining a guideline for work completion. This type of PMO supports development projects and company activities. This is done by collecting project information, outlining best practices, training employees, and advising the top management.

This means having a strategic PMO at the executive echelon for better decision-making. Such a setup ensures effective communication of organizational objectives to align projects with the demands of key decision-makers.

An effective PMO is essential in ensuring the successful implementation and execution of projects. Top-performing PMOs often offer better guidelines for project completion. You need a team with experience in change management. Additionally, the process requires an individual with a comprehensive understanding of the organization, the culture, and its objectives. Alternatively, you may have to work with departmental leaders when setting up a PMO. This inclusion helps in managing resistance and enhancing collaboration. The first step involves analyzing the existing situation at the organization and the entire business environment.

Additionally, you may also have to evaluate projects within the organization. With the information from the analysis, you can devise a project management strategy that will improve the system. However, you need to be detailed in your analysis to ensure you capture every idea.

A complete situation analysis will help set project goals in line with company objectives. This is possible if you include all stakeholders in your evaluation. After analyzing the situation, you need to generate a plan that responds to your findings.

The first step here is to define the objective and responsibilities. What role do you want the PMO to serve? How can it respond to the shortcomings you have identified? The best idea is to start small and avoid overloading the PMO from the onset. You may want to stick to a single responsibility for improved productivity. Additionally, you should communicate with stakeholders to limit their requirements and align them with ongoing projects and objectives. A PMO may be viewed as new development within the organization.

This means it needs time to become commonplace. Additionally, expect a steep learning curve and help employees adapt accordingly. Every project requires thoughtful project implementation. You need to take a step at a time while bringing in the infrastructure required to see it through. During this stage, your focus should be on change management and helping employees adapt to the new normal.

For instance, communicate to the employees about the project, the project team to see it through, the team leader, and its benefits. Once the implementation phase is on all systems go, you need a performance metric to evaluate success. For instance, you will need ways to determine progress after every stage. How do you intend to measure performance? What would be the key performance indicators? This is where you need to set standards and timeframes.

Part of the role of a PMO is to offer standardization so that variables are controlled across all projects. If issues on individual projects can be accurately attributed to the recommendations or guidelines of the PMO, then rectifying these issues at the source will remedy them on future projects across your organization. Now you know more about PMO in project management and how you can use it to improve project performance. Additionally, you have better knowledge of the importance of PMO in every organization and what makes an effective PMO.

This information should help you improve your organization by understanding clearly what does a PMO mean, how does one go about setting up a PMO and how does an organization successfully implement a PMO in a scaled and healthy fashion.

Equation for learning rate project management

Albeit, it might surprise you that many projects still fail to meet the intended results even when you take all the necessary measures and appropriate processes for a successful project. Successful project management is achieving a continuous stream of project objectives within time, cost, and at the desired performance or technology level. This involves the effective and efficient use of the assigned resources to produce products, results, or services that the customer accepts. One of the key requirements for a successful project is to achieve expected results, objectives, or services within the allocated project budget. The only way to achieve such is to manage the project cost-efficiently as per the Cost Management Plan. Project Cost Management is a process that involves planning, management, and control of the project to comply with the approved budget.

Estimates have a huge influence on a project and are a large source of project risk. Watch this video on time estimates to learn about how estimates are used for project planning by Prof C [] below.

The transcript is available on YouTube. As the video mentions, all estimates contain risk. If estimates are too low, then a project will take more time and money to complete than what was budgeted. Obviously, a bad situation.

If estimates are too high, then a project will take less time and money than originally estimated. This might seem to be a desirable situation, but good project managers will realize that estimates that are too high will cause an organization to over allocate resources to a project, thereby preventing other projects from being pursued due to organizational resource shortages. Therefore, it is important to have the most accurate estimates possible.

The project team needs to understand the value of accurate estimates and avoid the natural human tendency to pad estimates. Once unbiased estimates for a project have been generated, the project manager can calculate what time buffers and budgetary reserves should be added to the project plan to deal with uncertainty.

Prior to project authorization, estimates for project cost need to be given, but these estimates can be rough estimates. As the project progresses, more definitive estimates will be needed and can be generated. Top-down, or macro, estimation methods allow for a quick estimate of project costs based on historical information. Analogous estimating uses information from a previous project to estimate the cost of completing a similar project in the future.

Parametric estimates, also called the ratio method , uses historical information or industry benchmarks as the basis for making an estimate. Parametric estimates are made by multiplying the size of a project by an established cost per unit.

Bottom up estimation techniques generate estimates for individual work packages or sub-deliverables, which are then summarized to reflect total costs. Bottom up estimates are more accurate, detailed and take more time to generate. Instead of relying on historical information, bottom-up estimates rely on people with experience who can provide time and cost estimates for a particular work package or sub-deliverable.

The risk with single point estimates is that the estimator will overlook some aspect of the work and inadvertently provide an inaccurate estimate. Instead of asking an estimator for just one estimate, a three-points estimate asks the estimator to provide three-time estimates for each activity:.

These three estimates can be used as inputs to calculate an estimated time for the activity or work package to be completed. Skip to content Chapter 7 — Scheduling Resources and Budgets.

An architect can use this information to make a parametric estimate by multiplying the cost per square foot by the size of any new building being considered. If an organization wants to build a new hospital using union labor, a rough estimate of the construction cost can be calculated using the information in Table 5. The organization can then use this estimate as an approximate cost and start securing the money for the project.

Definitive estimates are generated as the project progresses and the variability of the estimate is reduced see Figure Number of screens installed. Time to install projector screen. Data from Table shown on graph

We are all familiar with the expression 'learning curve' or 'practice makes perfect' and probably have used it many times without thinking about the science or math behind it. When a particular task or sequence of work is repeated without interruption, subsequent operations require reduced time and effort.

If you don't read past this first paragraph, remember just two things: You almost never move up a learning curve, only down. And the steeper the curve, the easier the learning. Learning curves were first used by the aircraft industry in the s. The Boeing Co.

When your business takes on a new project, the success or failure of your work depend on the efficiency of your project management efforts — and the most important element of your project management efforts is handling project management costs. Project management is a process that aims to help initiate, plan, execute, control, and finish a project by meeting specific requirements and goals, all before a specific deadline.

I decided to explore the learning curve formula: a create it in Excel and b think about the factors that go into learning Excel. In other words The more you learn the easier it gets. In this Excel file I converted the formal equation into a formula:. See columns E and F. At the top I used a simple method to reduce the value above by the same learning curve percent. Below that I used the formula described above.

Russia-Ukraine crisis: 5 things to know about Putin’s bold move

Meanwhile on the ground, fighting in eastern Ukraine intensifies with Kyiv reporting fatalities and injuries among soldiers, blaming shelling by pro-Russian separatists. He wants the US and NATO to promise that they would never allow Ukraine to become a member of the alliance, saying that Ukraine should be a buffer, neutral state.

But Western leaders have rejected those demands. In what many observers say is an attempt to menace Ukraine, Moscow has amassed an estimated , troops along the shared border. Western nations led by Washington are convinced that Russia is planning a large-scale attack. Moscow denies this, and says it can move its troops and military equipment wherever it sees fit — in its own territory — claiming its actions are of self-defence. The move led to a bloody conflict between Ukraine and Russia-backed forces, which partly ended with the signing of the Minsk agreement a year later.

The deal called for a ceasefire in the region, the departure of foreign forces and a degree of autonomy for the separatist-held areas. But Russia says that it was not party to the conflict and that along the km contact line, fighting never really stopped — accusing Kyiv of breaching the ceasefire.

Section 13 also concerns the right to strike. It reads as follows:. Nothing in this Act, except as specifically provided for herein, shall be construed so as either to interfere with or impede or diminish in any way the right to strike, or to affect the limitations or qualifications on that right. It is clear from a reading of these two provisions that: the law not only guarantees the right of employees to strike, but also places limitations and qualifications on the exercise of that right. See for example, restrictions on strikes in health care institutions set forth below.

We may be tempted to think of intercultural communication as interaction between two people from different countries. While two distinct national passports communicate a key part of our identity non-verbally, what happens when two people from two different parts of the same country communicate? Indeed, intercultural communication happens between subgroups of the same country. Whether it be the distinctions between high and low Germanic dialects, the differences in perspective between an Eastern Canadian and a Western Canadian, or the rural-versus-urban dynamic, our geographic, linguistic, educational, sociological, and psychological traits influence our communication.

Deadly and disruptive as it already is, and terribly as it could yet worsen and spread, the coronavirus outbreak could also have political effects that last long after the contagion is contained. Crisis Group identifies seven points of particular concern.
