Helping to make business managers better leaders

Small Business Management Tips for Success

Leadership can be a struggle to develop, as there are intrinsic qualities that are tough to cultivate. When it comes to leading a team , you have to be willing to go out on a limb for your employees to show you have their back. When you build trust, it demonstrates that your own interests and actions will never supersede the goals of the organization or your employees.

It prevents you from building trust and an open environment that will develop your team. One of the main duties of a leader is coaching your employees. As a leader, you should foster trust and cooperation. Leaders can paint a vision of the future that inspires the team to do whatever it takes to get there.

Give credit where credit is due. Find ways to energize, motivate and show confidence in your team with the belief they can do anything they set their minds to. Take advantage of performance reviews.

Use the results of those reviews to provide opportunities for employees to grow and develop specific traits or skills.

When the mistake is yours, take ownership. Be credible — people want to follow an honest leader. People will trust someone who actively displays honesty. It makes it a lot easier to see someone perform in action than living by words on paper. Identify potential mentors who have similar values, then have casual meetings with them to find the one with whom you have good rapport.

Be prepared to explain what you hope to learn, why you value their insight and expertise, and what you bring to the relationship.

And our strategic plan does have 4 pillars: professional development resources and tools, as well as advocacy and research. Alana Hippensteele : Right, right, absolutely. During your term as HOPA as president, what are some initiatives that you championed?

The first really centered around diversity, equity, and inclusion, and how we can do more work as pharmacists in that space. Secondly, we have tried to expand our reach. I mentioned the different types of pharmacists that work in a variety of different settings. Again, we want to reach all those pharmacists. So, specialty pharmacists, investigational drug services—we've had programming that has been targeted for them. And I think that that has been quite successful.

That way students can immediately bring their voice to HOPA, the national stage, and help us with things like programming and other offerings that are going to be beneficial for students, right. This national student group is made up of a combination of faculty members, as well as students, and the group is going to be led by Amber Clemmons and Nicholas Chow.

So, we were able to work with a consultant that made a variety of different recommendations. One of those was the development of a diversity equity inclusion task force, which we did assemble. And that group has been amazing. They have done an amazing job. We have put together a diversity equity inclusion statement, but other things that that group is doing is they are also looking at how to make our members really feel more included.

Alana Hippensteele : You mentioned the oral chemotherapy collaborative as an important initiative, can you describe that group and their short- and long-term goals? Larry Buie : Absolutely, and this is a group that is really, I think, important for HOPA in the future to really be able to have a leadership role in this space.

There are so many oral chemo therapies out there now. And clearly there is a role for pharmacists to be engaged from things like making sure that patients are adherent to their medication to make sure that we are identifying toxicities quickly, so that ultimately, we can keep those patients on their therapy, and hopefully out of our emergency rooms or the hospital.

I think that's ultimately one of the goals. So knowing that pharmacists can participate in improving the quality for patients that are receiving oral chemo therapies, we did assemble a group that has been led by Karen Farris from the University of Michigan and Benyam Muluneh, from the University of North Carolina, to really assemble what we believe are some of the best in terms of quality research adherence, being able to use metrics to really improve the care of patients that are receiving oral chemo therapies.

But also looking across our membership, performance surveys of those that have an expertise in chemotherapy. And ultimately, what we want to know is what the value is, what does it bring to the care? And what is the value that is demonstrated by having a pharmacist leading sometimes the initiatives around oral chemotherapy? Alana Hippensteele : Burnout is a huge issue in the pharmacy field, also in the medical profession more broadly speaking—what are some ways that HOPA is attempting to address burnout, as I understand this was an issue even before the start of the pandemic?

Larry Buie : That's right. I think that I can say that we have probably all experienced at least some degree of burnout from time to time. It is a huge issue in health care and it's certainly not pharmacy-specific, but there definitely are data out there that would suggest that pharmacists do experience a high amount of burnout, and burnout can be as bad for so many reasons. You know, not only can it make you feel disgruntled in your current job, but it can change the quality of your life.

It can lead to things like depression sleep disorder, so it can give a person poor overall health. But it can also decrease performance and even lead to things like compassion fatigue, which is absolutely something that we don't want to have happen.

And how we can tackle that because I think a lot of times, we don't necessarily think about the folks that are in the leadership roles as having burnout as well.

So excited that there's an opportunity to talk about that. I think, finally, HOPA has been able to engage with a consultant group that helped us better understand issues of burnout in our own organization. And they are currently helping us put together a roadmap, a plan moving forward.

And they are a fantastic group. And Anne Krolikowski is currently our executive director. So, this would be a position that would report to our executive director but would support the board.

And we felt like we needed to add this position. Because HOPA clearly has a mission and a vision that we hope to be able to achieve. And we have really learned over the years that we can't do it all on our own. We can't do everything that we want to do that we know is going to better the patient experience, improve the quality of their care, or demonstrate our value. We can't lead every one of those initiatives, right, we need partners. And those relationships need to be built over time.

Every project boils down to money. If you had a bigger budget, you could probably get more people to do your project more quickly and deliver more. But no matter whether your project is big or small, and no matter how many resources and activities are in it, the process for figuring out the bottom line is always the same. It is important to come up with detailed estimates for all the project costs. Once this is compiled, you add up the cost estimates into a budget plan.

What does a negative cost variance mean in project management

For instance, Earned Value Analysis EVA compares the performance measurement baseline to the actual schedule and cost performance. EVM integrates the scope baseline with the cost baseline and schedule baseline in order to form the performance measurement baseline. Cost Variance is the amount of budget deficit or surplus at a given point in time.

It is a measure of cost performance on a project. It is expressed as the difference between Earned Value and Actual Cost. The cost variance at the end of the project will be the difference between the Budget at Completion BAC and the actual amount spent. A positive CV indicates the project is under planned cost. A negative CV indicates the project is over the planned budget. The CV is particularly critical because it indicates the relationship of physical performance to the costs spent.

It can be inferred that the project is over planned budget as CV is in negative and CPI is less than 1. Your email address will not be published. Post Comment. Download Now. What is Cost Variance?

In project management , the Earned Value method is one of the most appreciated and well-known project management tools. It combines the measures of the project management triangle : scope, time and costs.

Posted by SkillMaker in Jan, A project baseline is a collection of base data or values for a project. Typically, this will include the planned budget, the original start and finish dates for a project and the expected effort e. For analysis of baseline variances to be meaningful, baseline values need to be as accurate as possible, as they are the measure against which performance is measured. So that baseline variance can be calculated, the baseline values must be saved in the project schedule. Baseline variances are basically the differences between what was expected to happen on a project as planned and documented in the Project Plan — be it costs incurred or time taken — and what did actually happen. However, as the project advances, these differences, and consequent performance predictions, are likely to become more accurate. A project baseline provides manager with the means to assess project performance and to work out values for the Earned Value Management calculations EVM.
