Das checked the company's LinkedIn profile and saw many of its entry-level employees were promoted within their first six to eight months. For Das, it was a sign the company was invested in keeping their employees around.

Das studied biomedical sciences, chemistry and sociology in college and applied to medical school but was rejected on her first try. She took some time to think through her next move and picked up marketing jobs at a few local small businesses. The Covid pandemic made her want to jump into health care, so in June , she took a job with a health-care network to develop a text-based app where patients could connect to their doctor.

She completed the six-month course within six weeks and began applying to jobs immediately. She earned her PM certification in mid-December and landed her new job by January. As an associate project manager, Das works on her own projects and plays a support role to other people on her team. Das says she initially found discussing pay in hiring interviews to be "so uncomfortable.

In February, Das posted her own TikTok going over the difference between her base salary and her total compensation — something she wishes see saw more of when she was researching what kind of pay to negotiate for. She often saw people, mostly men, posting their pay in the mid-six figures.

It included their benefits and stock options but often didn't name the base salary, which is what she needed to work off of. Das heard from other tech newcomers that they felt discouraged and didn't know where to start negotiating. Das, who lives with the chronic illness cardiac-valvular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, hopes posting her own salary breakdown encourages others from underrepresented backgrounds to see space for them in tech.

Breaking into tech wasn't the easiest thing for me. Das has also grown more comfortable discussing pay with co-workers. Her first week on the job, she asked someone about how stock options work.

Her colleague ended up going through her starting salary, her progression at the company and how she negotiated her pay — which Das plans to take with her into her next salary conversation with managers. She feels the start-up encourages a culture of transparency, which makes it easier to talk about money. Das admits that working toward a promotion and raise within the year "feels like crazy fast development," but given the feedback she's gotten from supervisors, she feels "very confident that I'll be able to accomplish that, whether it's within my current organization or moving to another.

Eventually, she wants to work her way up to becoming a tech executive and lead organizations toward "more success, more growth, and more inclusive behaviors long-term. Enterprise information management vision statement

At the Enterprise Data World […]. There are numerous definitions of Enterprise Information Management, leaving many businesses puzzling over what the term actually means. Each organization must first choose their own framework, custom designed for their own specific needs. Some businesses focus on unstructured data more than structured data, for instance, requiring a different framework than a business that focuses on structured data.

This will be different for each organization, down to the term used to describe the initiative, whether it is Enterprise Information Management, Data Management, or some variation of one of those terms. Many businesses are nervous about taking this step, but sometimes businesses find they are better prepared for EIM than they realized. Even among organizations that might not be as far along as others, there are pockets of capability.

Those pockets can be utilized as a stepping stone toward achieving EIM goals. The analysis should include all domains of EIM, including those already in place and those not currently represented. Understand direction for EIM within the organization and program duration by preparing a maturity assessment and roadmap.

They are:. Involve key EIM stakeholders in all strategic discussions and align the program goal with strategic initiatives. In this phase, a business develops its strategy and vision. Businesses ask themselves why they are developing an EIM program. Business stakeholders and IT stakeholders should be a part of developing this strategy.

Smith emphasized that if a business cannot answer these types of questions with confidence, that business needs an EIM vision. Communicating these concepts to key players in the organization is crucial, but it is a challenge data professionals face each day. These concepts cannot be expected to be grasped in one conversation. Smith has found it is necessary to have repeated conversations about EIM on an ongoing basis to permanently improve awareness of EIM.

Gain an understanding of resource needs and prepare for education, training, and resource acquisition. Part of communicating EIM is understanding the key personnel and other resources available at an organization. Each of these groups requires different communication styles, so it falls to data professionals to learn as much as possible about each group.

Smith provided a Communication Plan Template to help data professionals determine what messages they plan to communicate and how often they hope to communicate them. What is the expected outcome of each communication? Many programs succeed or fail, in part, because of communication. By coming up with a vision or mission statement, analyzing the audience for your message, and determining your overall key points, you can more effectively communicate the important points of your program to important personnel in your organization.

Two important criteria in measuring success are:. Many businesses emphasize one of these two criteria, but some measure against both sets of values. Each business should identify ways to measure its success. This pilot helps implement the education and communication part of the project, while also training Data Stewards.

Throughout the pilot, businesses should consistently evaluate the program throughout the pilot to determine successes and failures.

In the book Seven Habits of Highly Successful People, author Stephen Covey suggests that individuals and organizations create mission statements, objectives and roles to effectively understand their purpose and the scope of the activities they believe to be important. Since many organizations are attempting to understand the purpose and benefits of Data Administration, creating a Mission Statement and identifying Key Objectives and Roles could assist in defining the depth and breadth of the Data Administration function. The following Mission Statement, Key Objectives, and Roles are offered as a starting point for organizations and individuals involved in DA to contemplate their purpose and to begin the process of defining the scope of their functions. Data Administration is chartered by General Accident GA to build, implement and manage data assets, thereby enabling our customers to make sound, consistent, information-based decisions. Data Administration consists of strategies, standards, policies, models, and databases that recognize information as a valuable asset which serves all GA associates.

Align better with strategic imperatives by improving data access, cultivating data literacy, and standardizing organizational data management to improve quality.

This means only those you explicitly allow can access certain information. For example, if you're a tech startup with a small team of developers and one sales rep, you can set restrictions so that only your sales rep can access revenue and payment details. The information could be essential for help them to do their job well, but it's unnecessary for the development team. Imagine that one of those developers requests access to a specific customer's data and purchasing history.

This is what your iPhone does when you've consecutively entered the wrong passcode to unlock your phone. The system detects forced entry, and as a precaution temporarily blocks entry or deletes all data on the phone. Let's go back to the tech startup example.

Say the business uses a CRM, an accounting system, and a data reporting tool. They hire a marketing intern who needs access to all three apps, but at varying degrees. They can set up a security system that allows the intern to access all three apps with a single verified log in, but set up restrictive access within each app.

Security protocols keep your data secure and away from prying hands. Your customers share personally identifiable information PII and sensitive contact details with you in trust. In turn, as a business, you must do everything you can to uphold their faith, and ensure their identity isn't compromised. The best data thieves today only need a single email address to hack into multiple accounts that use the same email. All businesses should comply with privacy and security regulations set by governments across the globe.

IAM tools are purpose-built to help you manage access permissions and establish strong security protocols around your data systems. They perform many functions including:. Sure, if you're a tech startup building an app that instantly identifies the many kinds of mushrooms on the Takanya trail, you likely don't need biometric authorisation.

However, you'll still need a certain level of security to ensure:. Regardless of your organisation's size or your audience's security savvy, you can set up some simple access controls to protect your data. Give your employees a single login credential that they can use to access all your business systems at once.

This minimises the number of passwords they need to remember and they're less likely to note it down somewhere that unauthorised persons can easily access. Depending on the technology and apps you use in your everyday business, you'll have a variety of SSO options. For example, if you choose a complete software suite like Zoho One , because all your CRM, accounting, marketing, inventory, and data management apps are from the same developer, you'll automatically have SSO enabled in your Zoho account.

Your additional verification could be an email, voice, or text OTP, a face or fingerprint ID, security questions, or an authorisation from an external device or app. The Australian Government does this with your myGov account—every time you want to log in, after you enter your username and password, you also have to enter the numeric passcode generated in the MyCodeGenerator app or the code sent to your phone.

Many businesses use two authentication systems, such as a password and a one-time password, making it a two-factor authentication. Most of us save our passwords in our browsers or cloud accounts. It's instant, convenient, and is always there, no matter which device you're logging in from. It's the perfect little manager for personal use. However, when it comes to storing passwords of business systems, you're better off with a dedicated tool that's designed to manage your passwords against most known threats.

For example, Zoho Vault is our own password manager that lets you store all your business account details, share them with others in your organisation securely, and organise everything in a way that makes sense to you.

Either way, investing in an account management system can save you a lot of time and hassle in the long run. You don't want to hear an angry customer complain that one of your suppliers had gained access to their contact information and was now spamming them with promotions. Data security should be at the heart of your business, regardless of your industry. When you take the necessary measures to protect your customers' data, you send them a critical message.

Your email address will not be published. Tech Talk. Tech Talk Down Under. Cloud Business Marketing. Permission-based access This means only those you explicitly allow can access certain information.

Single Sign On Give your employees a single login credential that they can use to access all your business systems at once.

Multi Factor Authentication Hopefully, you have this enabled already, at least in a few of your systems if not all. Online password managers Most of us save our passwords in our browsers or cloud accounts. Account management Your business data is only as safe as you keep it. Final thoughts Data security should be at the heart of your business, regardless of your industry.
