Methodologies contain guiding processes for those who are doing project management. The true definition is that methodologies are not tool specific, however in today's software-reliant world the reality is that the methodology and the organization's project management software tool are often heavily intertwined.

But not every project management methodology will work for every type of projects. In order to recognize which method will work best for your project, you need to be familiar with these common project methodologies and their differences. While there are dozens of project management methods available, an appropriate project management methods can help you team to manage your project much more efficiently.

Agile Methodologies were originating resulted from the use of the waterfall model were seen as bureaucratic, inflexible, slow, and inconsistent with the ways that software developers actually perform effective work.

Agile method is people-focused and commnuication-oriented, flexible ready to adapt to expected change at any time , speedy encourage rapid and iterative development of the product in small releases , lean focuses on shortening timeframe and cost and on improved quality , responsive reacts appropriately to expected and unexpected changes , and learning focuses on improvement during and after product development.

Agile processes generally encourages frequent inspection and adaptation, a leadership philosophy that encourages teamwork, self-organization and accountability, a set of engineering best practices intended to allow for rapid delivery of high-quality software, and a business approach that aligns development with customer needs and company goals.

With adaptive project management the scope of a given project can vary. While the time needed to complete the project and the cost of the project are constants, the project scope can be adjusted as it is being executed. Businesses commonly do this to get maximum value out of each project, such as when new ideas or opportunities are unlocked during the development of a project.

The developments are time boxed, delivered and then assembled into a working prototype. This can quickly give the customer something to see and use and to provide feedback regarding the delivery and their requirements. The PMBOK framework consists of five process groups, ten knowledge areas and 47 project management processes. The knowledge areas group the PM processes by project management content. It sets out good practices and guidelines that are applicable to a wide range of industries and markets and cross multiple departments, from IT to production.

Each of these processes also falls into one of the five process groups, creating a matrix structure such that every process can be related to one knowledge area and one process group. It is both a methodology and a de facto standard used extensively by the UK Government and is widely recognized and used in the private sector, both in the UK and internationally.

It provides consistency of process, approach and language which can therefore be applied to pretty much any type of project.

PRINCE2 is a principles-driven project management methodology, which is based on seven principles, seven themes and seven processes. PRINCE2 is not a "waterfall" methodology or a "silver bullet" solution or a 'one size fits all' solution; it is a project management framework that can readily be tailored to any size or type of project.

Thus, it is both a perfect off the shelf method for complex projects, and as well as a great basis for tailoring to less complex project environments. In Kanban , project progress is displayed on a board.

Kanban makes it easy to visualize what work is being going on and what's next. Kanban methodology works best for a small team. Also individuals consider the use of personal Kanban boards as effective use of methodology.

The benefit is the visual display of what is coming up next and it makes it easy to reprioritize. Kanban charts usually consist of general categories of projects or tasks "To-Do", "Doing", and "Done". When a project manager comes in to put work to the board, they can easily be shown what work is going on and what is coming up and how "newly added work" will affect the entire team.

It and can be used as the framework for improvement projects outside of Six Sigma. The two most popular project management solutions being implemented today are adaptive and predictive. Adaptive is widely known as agile, and predictive is also referred to as the waterfall or traditional methodology. To avoid the limitations of the waterfall approach, agile method targets to be a flexible and iterative project management technique for dealing with rapidly change of customer requirements.

One the other hand, the waterfall project management methodology details planning and upfront requirement before a project starts rolling. Steps and dependencies are explicitly mapped, and the project moves on to the next phase only when the previous one has already been completed. This solution works well for projects with defined tasks and sequences, and when you know exactly what the final deliverable should be. Based on these rough guidelines, you can see that both agile and waterfall have their uses, so that saying agile is better than waterfall - or the other way around, for that matter - is completely inaccurate.

It all boils down to understanding which approach better jives with the needs of your project and the team you're working with. Since all projects vary and have differing requirements, there can be no project management method that is "best" and which applies to all businesses.

Thus, project Management Methodologies are definitely not one-size-fits all, even within the same company, project type or industry. In one situation a specific methodology may work best, and in others it may be more suitable to have another one, or even a hybrid methodology. The same methodology is unlikely to work in the same organization on all projects. We can consider some of these factors for determining which methodology might be right for you:. Project management methodology is an essential for today's businesses.

By adopting an appropriate method for your project, you can transform the way your project team communicates, works on tasks, and accomplishes project milestones on time and within budget. Whether you fully adopt one project management method of the above, or need to customize a particular method for fitting your specific need, using Visual Paradigm's Just-in-Time PMBOK process , will significantly increase your team's productivity and efficiency.

Businesses that utilize a project management method described above are far more likely to be successful with Visual Paradigm. Visual Paradigm enable your team work collaboratively and manage, assign and delegate tasks, share files, other resources automatically, and much more.

Plus, Visual Paradigm is flexible enough to be customized by adding or removing works or deliverables from any project management methods in just-in-time and just-enough manner! In Visual Paradigm, we provide the following method templates and the new templates will expect to be introduced in the coming few releases.

In Visual Paradigm, a set of ready-to-use JIT process templates are included for project management and enterprise architecture. For project management templates, there are 4 different levels of complexity for different types of projects to adopt with.

In addition, a PMBOK-like project management process template together with the forms and instructions are also provided. You can adopt these templates straight way, or customize the process a bit by adding your own forms and etc.

In addition, you can use it to model many different aspects of process activities ranging from event and task management member view, project view, or deliverable view , to product development or agile process management by configuring the column headers as phases, members, projects, deliverables and etc. For instance, you can present process like PMBOK by having development phases as columns and knowledge areas as rows.

How to Write a Management Summary in a Business Plan

Our physical offices are closed, but our advisers remain at your disposal to help you plan the resumption of your activities. Growing a business means taking many decisions about the way you want to expand your operations.

A business plan is about setting short- or mid-term goals and defining the steps necessary to achieve them. A strategic plan is typically focused on a business' mid- to long-term goals and explains the basic strategies for achieving them. This guide sets out the basics of the strategic planning process. It explains how to go about drawing up a strategic plan, it highlights some important issues to bear in mind and it shows how to turn from planning to implementation.

As your business becomes larger and more complex, so strategy formulation will need to become more sophisticated, both to sustain growth and to help you muster the leadership and resources you need to keep your business developing. To do this, you will also need to start collecting and analysing a wider range of information about your business - both about how it operates internally and about how conditions are developing in your current and potential markets.

The process of strategic planning is about determining the direction in which you want to take your business. It involves setting out your overall goals for your business. By contrast, the purpose of the business plan is to provide the detailed roadmap that will take you in your desired direction. Your strategic planning and your business planning should be complementary, but effective strategy development requires you to shift your focus from the day-to-day concerns of your business and to consider your broader and longer-term options.

Developing a strategy for business growth requires you to deepen your understanding of the way your business works and its position relative to other businesses in your markets.

As a starting point, you need to ask yourself the following three questions:. While the second question - Where do you want to take it? You should balance your vision for the business against the practical realities of your current position and changes, such as increased investment in capital and other resources that would be required to implement your vision.

A good rule of thumb is that you shouldn't try to do it all yourself. Take on board the opinions of other staff - key employees, accountants, department heads, board members - and those of external stakeholders, including customers, clients, advisors and consultants. There is no right or wrong way to plan the process of strategic planning, but be clear in advance about how you intend to proceed. Everyone involved should know what is expected of them and when. For example, you may decide to hold a series of weekly meetings with a strategy team before delegating the drafting of a strategy document to one of its members.

The Five Forces model aims to help businesses understand the drivers of competition in their markets. It identifies five key determinants of how operating in a given market is likely to be for a business:. There is no set blueprint for how to structure a strategic plan, but it is good practice to include the following elements:.

You may also want to consider adding an executive summary. This can be useful for prospective investors and other key external stakeholders. Growing a business can pose some considerable personal challenges to the owner or manager, whose role can change dramatically as the business grows. Effective strategic planning involves considering options that challenge the way that business has been done up to this point.

In the final analysis, it is the owner of the business who decides the strategic plan. Growing a business is not something done "at all costs". However, an honest assessment of the options allows for any decisions made to be as informed as possible.

The key to implementation of the objectives identified in the strategic plan is to assign goals and responsibilities with budgets and deadlines to responsible owners - key employees or department heads, for example. Monitoring the progress of the implementation plan and reviewing the strategic plan against implementation will be an ongoing process.

The fit between implementation and strategy may not be perfect from the outset and the implications of implementing the strategy may make it necessary to tweak the strategic plan. Monitoring implementation is the key. Using key performance indicators KPIs and setting targets and deadlines is a good way of controlling the process of introducing strategic change.

Your business plan is another important tool in the implementation process. The business plan is typically a short-term and more concrete document than the strategic plan and it tends to focus more closely on operational considerations such as sales and cash flow trends. If you can ensure that your strategic plan informs your business plan, you'll go a long way to ensuring its implementation. Remember that strategic planning can involve making both organisational and cultural changes to the way your business operates.

You should also write it down and review it periodically.

What is the best way of implementing those changes - what changes to the structure and financing of your business will be required and what goals and deadlines will you need to set for yourself and others in the business? Think about the business as a whole, for example consider diversification, existing growth, acquisition plans, as well as functional matters in key areas.

Business Management: 4 Types of Planning

A strategic plan is a great way to map out your long-term strategy for the next three to five years, but you need additional planning documents to help you get there. Some of this planning will be developed yearly—things like your yearly objectives and key results, for example, will naturally grow as time goes on. Operational planning is the process of turning your strategic plan into a detailed map that outlines exactly what action your team will take on a weekly, or sometimes even daily, basis. An operational plan will include action items and milestones that each team or department needs to complete in order to execute your strategic plan. But if your organization tends to think more long-term, create an operational plan for the entire fiscal year. A strategic plan is a business-level plan of your long-term strategy for the next three to five years. An operational plan is smaller in both scope and timeline. The goal of operational planning is to outline the daily actions you need to take to hit your strategic goals. Unlike a strategic plan, an operational plan should also focus on implementation. What daily and weekly actions does your team need to take in order to accomplish your longer-term strategic plan?

Painless Operational Planning

Your business plan is an elaborate set of instructions stating how to run your business to achieve objectives and goals. Each section describes a part of the process to reach your desired goal. Adam is an adjunct professor of service design thinking at the world-class IE Business School in Madrid, was one of the first SDN Master trainers, and has been recognized with the Core77 prize for service design. A specialist in facilitation, he loves to help people better collaborate and create more value. Adam enjoys nature, riding his classic Japanese motorcycle, and dressing up in medieval clothes to hit his friends with sticks.

The question of a definition is a very active one. Do you wanna have a go, Marc? Adam will do a very short one, so I will try to elaborate a little bit. For me, service design is really the design process around any service that is the route or the basis for any experience.

We design with people, not for people. My definition is a very simple one. I say service design is what service designers do.

And it goes back to what Marc said about how different designers have different definitions of what they do. Paul [] Amazing. Is that fair? UX these days is very, very on the screen focus. But it used to be about where do I buy it? How do I unpackage it? How do I transport it home? Which are questions which today experience designers, service designers, and so on would look at. Marc [] Design is a team sport. And particularly if you look at the diversity of services out there, what a service designer does is we design services in the area of public services.

So implementation is part of the design process. Wnd we jump between these activities as needed. And in these different activities we use different tools and methods. Marc [] And if you want to boil it down, what are the core things you always should be doing and what usually organizations do not enough is actually research and prototyping. So research means really understanding customer needs, behavior patterns, motivations, but then beside the customer and also understanding the organization, understanding employees and employee experiences.

We reject those definitions of these. Research and prototyping happen in an iterative loop, and iteration is the third thing to get right. They give you new questions, which you might answer with more research or with more prototyping. And this is what reduces the risk. And this is why people often come to us as service designers, because their world is changing too fast for linear development techniques anymore. I need a more organic, a more down-to-earth, based on reality, fewer PowerPoint vision statements and more experiments out there in reality, to learn their way forward, to evolve their thinking, rather than dreaming our way forward.

Paul [] I love the way that you brought that to a higher level. And I think the thing that I heard most in that project mindset of how an agency or the service designer in an organization can bring this to the table practically today is by taking that, I hate to use the phrase old school, but taking that linear thinking out of the conversation and starting to look for those opportunities to place those small bets that you mentioned, to research, prototype, iterate, but not in phases as a continuous loop.

And I think this is an interesting approach to people. And I want to point out, by the way, that linear thinking works really well for some problems. This is not a replacement of that. I wonder if we can shift gears for just a minute and talk about where service design has come.

As we mentioned, the book is over a decade old now. You are still teaching. Paul [] And it has outlived other buzzwords in the industry. It is a thing. But it is, as you mentioned, a living, organic, moving target of a definition.

Marc [] When we look back 15 years or so, the discussions in the community changed a lot. And in the beginning, like 15 years ago, remember, we were all trying to make a point for service design and trying to convince others that services are actually useful. Like people understand how important customer experience is, citizen experience is, and so on.

Then there was a time when there were simply not enough people out there who could do this. And what we see now is more and more interest into a strategic perspective on service design, or customer experience in general, because organizations understood how important that is. They understand the impact good customer experience has on topics like revenue, profit, costs.
