Dredging, mechanized trawling, oil exploration, and planned deep undersea metal mining threaten the seabeds [ 23 ]. Pollution — unwanted, often hazardous waste material released into the environment by human activity — is one of the existential challenges of the present age [ 24 ].
Pollution is also a great and growing threat to human health. It is the largest environmental cause of disease in the world today, responsible for an estimated 9 million premature deaths per year [ 24 ]. It causes enormous economic losses, undermines national trajectories of economic development, and impedes attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals SDGs [ 22 ].
Pollution has until recently been overlooked in international development planning and largely neglected in the global health agenda [ 25 ]. For too long, pollution has been regarded as the unavoidable price of economic progress [ 25 ], a view that arose out of the experience of the 19th and 20th centuries when combustion of fossil fuels — coal in particular — was the engine of economic growth and pollution was seen as unavoidable.
It has multiple direct and indirect impacts on human health [ 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 ]. The nature and magnitude of these effects are only beginning to be understood. The purpose of this review is to examine the impacts of ocean pollution on human health and well-being, identify gaps in knowledge, project future trends, and offer scientifically based guidance for effective interventions.
By focusing our analysis on human impacts, we underscore the fact that pollution of the oceans poses a clear and present danger to human health. It is causing disease, disability, and premature death in countries around the world today.
We examine the strength of the evidence linking pollutants to health effects [ 29 ]. To the extent possible, we consider health effects not only of individual pollutants, but also of the complex mixtures of chemical pollutants and biological contaminants found in the seas today.
We examine interactions and synergies among pollution, climate change and ocean acidification. Finally, we consider the prospects for prevention and control of ocean pollution and present case studies of success in pollution control. Pollution of the oceans is widespread, it is worsening, and its geographic extent is expanding [ 26 , 27 , 30 ]. Ocean pollution is a complex and ever-changing mixture of chemicals and biological materials that includes plastic waste, petroleum-based pollutants, toxic metals, manufactured chemicals, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and a noxious stew of nitrogen, phosphorus, fertilizer, and sewage Figure 1.
The relative concentrations of pollutants vary in different regions of the oceans and at different seasons of the year. Plastic pollution is the most visible component of ocean pollution.

This is empirically tested using survey data collected from friends of Spanish museums of fine arts. The sample is restricted to members of Spanish fine arts museums, thus limiting the generalisability of the findings. In a study of US art museums, we find that when donor restrictions are strong, museums shift their cost structures away from administration and toward program services. Restricted donations also appear to stabilize nonprofits, but reduce management flexibility. This paper studies the role of restricted donations in financing major US art museums.

The Forestry Commission has a huge responsibility. It cares for , hectares of sustainably managed woods and forests and plants more than 17 million trees a year. The Forestry Commission is a government department which employs over 3, workers across Britain. To do this, it works with a range of partners such as landowners, local authorities, communities and national businesses.
Instructions are passed down through the layers along the chain of command. Organisations may be structured by product, function or geography. Department stores, for example, are structured by product, e. UK government departments are structured by function, for example, Health or Education. The Board of Commissioners is responsible for overseeing the work of the Forestry Commission across Great Britain as a whole. However, there are national committees for each of Scotland, England and Wales. The Forestry Commission therefore is structured by geography.
This geographical structure has two main advantages. Firstly, it creates a regional base allowing decisions in Scotland, Wales and England to be made and managed at a regional level. This takes into account local conditions, needs and expertise.
Delegating decision-making down the hierarchy is referred to as decentralisation. Each country is engaged in:. While forest policy differs between the three countries, some internal policy decisions are still made at the top of the hierarchy. This ensures consistency where necessary throughout the whole of the Forestry Commission, for example, making certain that Britain adheres to international rules for sustainable forest management.
Centralisation also provides benefits from economies of scale, e. An organisational chart shows the pattern of relationships between the different workers in a firm. How these different roles interact will depend on the aims, objectives or culture of the organisation. The Forestry Commission is an organisation that values people. Individual members of staff are given a lot of responsibility and are encouraged to make decisions themselves where appropriate. The Commission works to a values statement setting out how people are expected to work together.
The values are based on:. People who work for the Forestry Commission have clearly defined roles, but work within teams. For example:. The Commission has to make the public understand that in some situations it is ok to cut down trees — if you replant. I joined the Forestry Commission as this offered me the chance to take a more applied approach to use my earlier studies in Ecology at university.
I have also produced a DVD about climate change for schools. I also know that I can have a long term career here because the Commission supports training and development to expand my skills. Vicky is a specialist adviser in the Climate Change Team in Edinburgh.
The best way of managing project work is through a matrix structure. This brings together employees from a range of different backgrounds and experience. Encompassing a wide range of specialisms within our organisation, we can excel in all that we do. Following a forestry degree at Bangor, Graham moved to Herefordshire in In he joined Pryor and Rickett Silviculture as a forester, becoming a Director in on incorporation. He is personally responsible for over 10, acres of forested land in England and has overseen the growth of the company in recent years. He has also been instrumental in developing the commercial forestry side of the business, managing investments in the uplands of Wales and further afield, whilst keeping a close eye on the forestry freehold markets. He now oversees the technical forestry team in England, and provides consultancy services throughout the UK. Ian is a graduate of Bangor University , and a member of the Institute of Chartered Foresters He became a Director in , and a fellow of the ICF in Specialising in the management of mainly commercial forest assets, Ian also has a wealth of experience in the management of lowland mixed woodland, and in other areas where his interest in continuous cover forestry management principles can be applied.

The Forestry Department is the lead Agency responsible for the island's forest resources. We manage approximately , hectares of forests in Jamaica. The Government's lead agency in the protection and conservation of the island's forest resources. The objective of the Initiative is to support national development in the areas of climate change and reforestation efforts to increase forest cover and establish high value urban green spaces for all Jamaicans. We provide a yearly forest hike called Forest Trek, usually held in March.
Dennis W. Bahiagrass Paspalum notatum Flugge is a long-lived, perennial warm season grass that is grown extensively in the southeastern United States Figure 1. It is most commonly used as a pasture species, but can be used for hay production, erosion control, and wildlife habitat. Bahiagrass can also be used in "sod-based rotation" sequences that have been found to suppress pest problems nematode and disease issues in crops such as peanuts. Bahiagrass is a deep-rooted, sod-forming species that is well adapted to a wide range of soils and conditions in this region. It spreads by short, stout stolons and is a prolific seed producing plant.
Burning scarifies the hard seed coat permitting germination. Vines grow from buds on a root crown at the soil surface. As the vines spread, rooting occurs from buds at each node on a vine. With vine growth of up to 50 feet in a single growing season, a single plant can spread to cover large areas each year.
Roots developing from the vine nodes usually enlarge into root crowns from which additional vines will arise. Mature stands of kudzu may have root crowns every 1 to 2 square feet. Roots of the established crowns can reach several inches in diameter and may grow to depths of three feet.
They have a high starch content that supports early spring growth and regrowth if vines are damaged by mowing or grazing in the summer. The fleshy, starch-rich roots make control difficult because this stored food reserve supports regrowth. To completely eradicate kudzu, it can take three to ten years of repeated treatments to deplete root reserves.
So control is necessary, not only in the young pines, but in the adjacent field borders as well. With a large root system packed with starch and aggressive growth habit, eradication of kudzu requires persistent treatment.
Several strategies can be employed to eradicate kudzu, including herbicides, prescribed burning, mowing, and livestock grazing. When selecting control strategy consider restraints which may prevent broadcast applications of herbicides, use of tractors to spray, or mow, and the presence of desirable vegetation in the patch.
Close mowing reduces the tangle of leaves and vines and treatment of regrowth is much easier accomplished. Thick mats of vines are often difficult to mow with light-duty rotary mowers.
Flail mowers with horizontal blades cutting in a chopping action may operate more effectively. Grazing - Using kudzu as a forage for cattle and other livestock was an early promotion with its introduction into the U.
Kudzu hay has excellent nutritional value and is palatable to livestock. To control kudzu by grazing it is necessary to adequately fence the entire patch and to provide sufficient additional grazing areas on which to rotate livestock as the kudzu is grazed down. Only by repeatedly grazing the regrowth over successive growing seasons will the root reserves of starch be depleted. Burning - Prescribed fire can be used to consume vines and leaves to permit inspection of the site and to determine the size and density of the kudzu root crowns.
Johnson , Forester, Forest Management, Georgia Forestry Commission Introduction Introduced to the United States at the turn of the century from Japan, kudzu, Pueraria lobata , was extensively planted throughout much of the southeast as an ornamental plant, for a forage crop, and most importantly for erosion control.
May be applied over-the-top of pines which have been established for at least one year in the field. For treatment of one-year-old pines, use the 1 to 2 oz. For use in spot applications in forestry on sites adjacent to right-of-ways or industrial areas. Spray on kudzu vines that are running up tree trunks or hanging from limbs. If damage to adjacent trees and other woody plants can be tolerated, 1 qt. Apply to kudzu growing in understory. Do not spray herbicide directly into water or allow runoff to contaminate surface water.
Combining mowing or a herbicide application with grazing can provide a wider window for control. Biological weed control may have a major impact.
