Fortunately, I have never been part of a medical response to a natural disaster. I have had my share of drills and activations, but no real disaster experience. But I have friends who have been in the middle of natural disasters where their hospitals and surrounding communities were rendered nonfunctional. The stories they tell. Often, we cannot prevent the damage from occurring, but we can plan to recover quickly. This often involves redundant resources and processes. Centralization of supplies and unity of command may be efficient during normal circumstances, but during disasters, decentralization of resources and direction can be the key to quick recovery.
