If you are doing a large project of around £200-£250k I would recommend using a project manager, but for a typical project in the range of £10-£50k it's not cost effective to use a project manager because there is not enough spare profit to make this viable.
I started off hiring individual trades in order to keep costs down, but also to learn how to manage a project myself. Through my experience, I found that I prefered to work with smaller builders who can do everything under one company or they have existing relationships with other contractors who they use regularly.
