Why you should learn anxiety management techniques and other mental skills before practising falling

Published
To climb to your potential, yes of course you need to be comfortable with taking the risk of falling, and this is where falling practice can be helpful. However, anxiety about falling can have such an impact on your technique, endurance, problem solving skills, route reading, and focusing abilities, that your actual climbing ability is reduced a long way below your potential climbing ability. Learning techniques to manage that anxiety, and mental skills such as focusing techniques and visualisation can help to close the gap, with falling practice being the last thing to work on rather than the first.
