Songwriters George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam originally wrote "How Will I Know" for Janet Jackson, but her management passed on it. The song was then picked up Arista Records as a pop crossover track for Whitney Houston's 1985 debut album. With some lyric and structural changes by producer Narada Michael Walden, it became the third single release from Whitney's album, and her second number-one US pop single.
