What is the new world of work?

Modes, forms and formats of work changes based on concurrent socioeconomic, technological and sector of work. Once, during the inception of industrial revolution in the Europe labor right were absent. By the passage of time ILO was established, people being civilized, mode and nature of work were changes. Currently especially after COVID-19 pandemic the globe experienced working from home / remote work especially during the lockdown.

Ms. Sonnia Singh , Leadership Coach, India was discussing about the new word of work in this episode of Meet the Expert in Developing Bangladesh. She was focusing on newly emerging workplace situation, working from home and gig works. Work is going to be flexible to location, professionals and workers needs re-skilling and up-skilling to cope with the new automated working environment. Because 65% of current tasks will get irrelevant by 2025 and newer tasks will be emerged. Ms. Singh was emphasizing upon not on degree but on skills, lifelong learning and virtual reality.

To discuss on the trends of work she was emphasizing upon inclusiveness and diversity of working environment. Working environment should be safe and supportive for every employee. Equal opportunities, skill focused and equal treatment to all has to be ensured. Employees have to be allowed to perform in a level playing field.

AI or robotics will not replace human being but these will be aid to human performance and safety in workplace. Remote / virtual work may be cause of employees isolated feelings, therefore managers have to ensure individual rapport building with each of his/her colleague.

To cope with tomorrows challenging situation employees have to identify the scope of his / her up-skilling and re-skilling. Professional will be in need of cognitive skills like critical thinking and analytical skills; communication skills like digital communication; interpersonal skills like relationship building; and self leadership skills to guide, control and monitor self performance.

Employers has great role in employees performance retention. Employer must take employees feedback on the working environment, management style and benefit packages of the company. They must have congenial, impartial, healthy relationship with the employees, allow them to speak and share their thought without fear or anxiety. Employers must be neutral, allow everybody to perform, encourage team work, and be the best coach of your employees.
Finally; Ms. Sonnia Singh was emphasizing on expanding market of gig economy and gig works. It is better for the skilled workers to perform multiple jobs at a time and earn more. It is allowing companies to outsource required skills as and when required. It will make companies less expensive and more competitive.
