Webinar on Decentralization and Local Governance in Eastern Africa Part 1 | Good Governance Africa

Published
Good Governance Africa, in partnership with the Civil Society Resource Center, hosted a webinar on decentralization and local governance in Eastern Africa on July 20th, 2022.

Countries employ different forms of structures at different levels of the governments. Yet, decentralization of power in various forms is generally assumed to be valuable for both empowering people at the local level as well as in providing effective and efficient services to citizens.

However, the practice in Eastern Africa countries in both realms generally seems to be minimal. This can be attested by the fact that the region has been experiencing recurrent cycles of conflict largely due to disarticulation in state-society relations. The region also remains underdeveloped lacking the capability to cater for the needs of its citizens.

Under the circumstances, it is imperative to ask why countries in the Region recognize the usefulness of decentralization and local governance at the level of rhetoric, but at the same time fail to practice it in its true sense.
The webinar, therefore, marks the conclusion of a research project on the policy and practice of decentralization and local governance in five selected Horn of Africa countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, the Sudan and Uganda).

The purpose of this webinar is to make sense of the current state of affairs in Kenya, Sudan and Uganda on the basis of the research findings. The output of the debate is believed to assist in bettering the practice of decentralization and local governance so as to eventually improve the governance systems of the countries and thereby the lives of citizens.
