Water management stages in wheat crop || Crop Reformer

Published
Water management is one of the major and important factor that is crucial to better production of wheat crop. Watering at a wrong time may become harmful for the crop. Irrigation according to the requirements of wheat crop will give better health, growth and development of plants to give higher yield. In this video, we have tried to deliver specific three important points at which irrigation plays a pivotal and proper role for betterment of crop. These three stages of wheat have been described in this video so that farmers can estimate the exact time of irrigation in their field of wheat.
Irrigation is considered very important source to convey, mobilize and absorb nutrients in wheat and most crops. Wheat planted after rice is still at 1st irrigation stage but 2nd irrigation is due in the 3rd week of December in central and south Punjab. In the scenario of annual canal closure, 2nd irrigation has gained more importance. In this video, we have recommended the farmers to make proper use of left over fertilizers at the 2nd irrigation to the wheat crop. Those farmers who have used proper phosphorus and potash at planting and urea fertilizer at 1st irrigation, are directed to add 25 kg urea and one kg boron at 2nd irrigation. Those farmers who could not add proper fertilizer at planting and 1st irrigation stage, those are directed to either fertigate 12.5 Kg NPK 16:22:23 plus one kg micro boron or 50 kg nitrophos plus 25 kg urea at 2nd irrigation. Second irrigation is also a key stage for improving heath and growth of wheat because after this stage, there are fewer options available for the farmer to finalize the nutrients needs of the crop. Boron can play a vital role and improves grain filling when spikes appear in later stages.
First irrigation is one of the most important factor in determination of proper growth and development of wheat plants. It water is not managed properly at this stage, it might be harmful for the overall production of the crop. In this video, a comparison of some plants has been showed to describe the proper time of watering in wheat by seeing the root development of the plants. Before this stage, irrigation may become harmful and the plants my change their color. Irrigation management is a necessary step in production technology of wheat.
All plants including wheat absorb water and nutrients in the presence of oxygen. When 1 st irrigation is applied to the wetter planted wheat, oxygen is excluded from the soil and plants tend to be affected. Especially, wheat crop is when planted in salt affected soil and 1 st irrigation is applied, this type of stress is more pronounced. Continuous over moisture condition in clayey soils, lesser amount of fertilizers in the sandy or loam soils, some wheat varieties are prone to excessive water stress, are also conducive to yellowing of wheat leaves. There is not a matter to worry about yellowing in most cases except water logged conditions. What to do in case of water stress? This thing has been elaborated in this video.
Yellowing of wheat leaves is a common issue of some of the wheat varieties. Many farmers are worried about the future of their crop. Previous year’s issue of yellow rust makes them more careful even from the tillering and jointing stages. I have advised that these disorders are not so much harmful, particularly under the positive scenario of useful rain showers received during the first and third weeks of January. Confusion of the farmers between earlier leaf yellowing and rust disease has been removed and frequent suggestions for spray of fungicides at this stage have also been rejected through this video. Leaves of wheat plants may turn yellow from tips due to lesser usage of fertilizers at initial stages of wheat crop that are needed for proper growth and development of wheat crop. Some varieties have their unique character of leaf yellowing after the first irrigation. But this is recoverable with the passage of time. Production technology of wheat is growing to innovative techniques and gaining the positive impact of farm machinery on overall yield of wheat crop. Recent rain fall will have very positive impact on wheat crop and this issue of leaf yellowing will be solved by itself.
