VSF: Prof Varadarajan : Environmentally sustainable economic development

Published
Sustainable development: “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (World Commission on Environment and Development 1987, p.8).

“Reports of our inadequate response to the climate emergency roll in as regularly as the tides. The latest came from the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, telling us that the crisis is getting worse even faster than we’d imagined. It’s hard to envision a louder alarm, and yet we seem able to sleep through it.” (David Remnick, Editor, The New Yorker, April 17, 2022. In his foreword to an online issue of The New Yorker commemorating Earth Day 2022, a compilation of selected articles from past issues that shed light into the urgency of the situation).

Issues relating to environmental sustainability are the focus of research in several academic disciplines, a principal concern of global organizations (e.g., United Nations Sustainable Development Goals), nation states, corporations, consumer groups, societal movements, and non-governmental organizations, to list a few.
Bequeathing an environmentally sustainable planet for future generations, is unquestionably a moral imperative for those of us currently inhabiting the planet. A focus of the speaker's academic journey during the past decade has been issues at the nexus of (1) environmental sustainability and marketing, and (2) environmental sustainability and innovation. He will share some the lessons learned (insights gleaned) from these journeys.
