With agrifood systems have become increasingly unsustainable, contributing to climate change and failing to provide healthy diets for all. Yet many such impacts, both positive and negative, are not reflected in the market prices of agricultural products.

Therefore, these decisions are being made using an incomplete information base. Using a True Cost Accounting (TCA) Analysis covering 154 countries, FAO uncovers the staggering scale of loss and shines a spotlight on the urgent need to factor the hidden costs of agrifood systems into governments’ policymaking that help shape these systems.

With this regard, on 13 November 2023 FAO in Geneva hosted a launch of the State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA), revealing for the first time the massive scale of the hidden costs imposed by modern agrifood systems equivalent to USD 12.7 trillion or 10 percent of global GDP.
