In this video, I have concluded the article of Prof. Mahendra Dev on transformation of agriculture. The 3 important aspects of this article are :
1. The performance of Agrarian sector over the last few decades
2. The equity issues within the agricultural sector
3. Sustainability concerns of this sector
One should first grasp the performance of our agrarian sector on these broad questions & then understand the reforms suggested by the author to transform the sector.
In the latter half of the lecture we switch to an article by Prof. Santosh Mehrotra & Sarthi Acharya - Agricultural market reforms. This article dwells into the efficiency & the equity aspects of the 3 farms laws introduced by the NDA govt. in 2020.
These 3 farm laws are pertaining to -
1. APMC Reforms (allowing private sector to setup mandis)
2. Contract Farming (trade between farmers & corporates)
3. ECA Amendment (reducing govt. distortions in market)
The article talks about the theoretical justification behind the reforms & also highlight the practical challenges that may crop up because of the laws.
Both these readings are extremely important for any serious UPSC Economics Optional aspirant as well as IES & RBI Grade B - DEPR aspirants.
Best,
Siddharth
