Treasurer Jim Chalmers says the government isn’t getting ahead of itself as he acknowledged the “structural challenges” in the budget.
Mr Chalmers delivered the 2023 federal budget on Tuesday, which forecasted a $4.2 billion surplus.
“We’re not getting ahead of ourselves in terms of what the future budgets might look like but we made really substantial progress on that structural challenge last night,” Mr Chalmers told Sky News Australia.
“We have avoided hundreds of billions of dollars in debt and therefore a lot of interest repayments on that debt.
“We’re proud of the progress that we made but there will always be more to do.”
