The Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works is holding a hearing focused on the federal government's ability to adequately respond to the rise in extreme weather the country is experiencing as a result of the climate crisis.
There is no debate: the U.S. is currently living through a climate emergency. A staggering 1 in 3 Americans experienced an extreme weather disaster firsthand this summer alone, from an historic drought and wildfire season on the West Coast, to an active hurricane season on the East Coast and Gulf region. Much of this hearing will focus primarily on the response to Hurricane Ida, which killed approx 90 people nationwide, flooded large areas of New York & New Jersey, and left thousands in Louisiana without power for weeks.
