Today's Highlights:

Scores of citizens gathered outside the Parliament in Port of Spain leading up to the Finance Minister's 2024/2025 Budget presentation on Monday 30th September 2024.

During the budget statement at parliament earlier today, the minister of finance, Colm Imbert disclosed that $91m was paid by residential homeowners in annual property tax.
• He went on to say that close to 90,000 residential homeowners made annual payments and there will be property tax deferrals for the vulnerable including those who rely on social welfare grants.

He also disclosed that $26 Billion was injected into the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service over the past ten years, which saw over 3,000 murders with the use of illegal firearms.

• The TTPS will acquire additional speed guns and technology along with body cams for its officers.

• The TTPS will purchase 2,000 new vehicles within the next two years with 500 vehicles to soon hit the roads to aid in its fight against crime and criminality.

In terms of immigration and Border patrol, an automated fingerprint system will be introduced by the immigration division.
12 new vessels and two fixed-wing aircraft will also be purchased for the coast and air guards by 2027.

In 2025, $210m will be spent on 100 new road paving projects.
• Moruga will get a new highway and the highway that links Cumuto with Sangre Grande is near completion.

• The Manzanilla/Mayaro Road rehabilitation program will cost $177m and should be completed in 2025.

The minister also disclosed that Trinidad and Tobago’s Food Import Bill for 2023 was $7.2 billion.

Close to $1 billion is expected to be spent on the expansion of the A.N.R Robinson airport in Tobago which is estimated to be completed in 2025.

$56 million will also be spent to upgrade the Magdelena Grand Hotel in Tobago for the next fiscal term.
