Model Railroading is a cool hobby that involves a lot of different activities and skills. It’s much more than just playing with toy trains!

Model trains are cool and fascinating all by themselves, and they’re even more interesting when they’re running through a realistic looking environment.

In this series, hosts Dan and Nichole are going to talk about the model train hobby from a beginner perspective. Dan has been a model railroader nearly all his life, and Nichole has come to the world of small trains only recently, so each has a different perspective.

Model railroading is a great hobby for all ages. Adults and young people can enjoy it, and besides being fun it’s also educational.

Model railroading is a great STEM / STEAM hobby. There’s benchwork to build, wiring to install, model bridges and buildings, small scale vehicles, model railroad planning, and railroad operations to conduct!

The hobby can encourage people to develop a diverse set of knowledge and skills, including:

Carpentry
Electronics
Engineering
Art
Geography
Geology
History
Architecture
Project Management
Logical Thinking
And even Math!

There’s also a great social aspect to the hobby. There are online groups, email lists, train clubs, and many other activities revolving around the model train hobby!
