This year, the theme for World Antimicrobial Awareness Week is "Raise awareness, and help stop antimicrobial resistance to drugs." Antimicrobial resistance is a major challenge facing the world as more viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites are becoming resistant to antibiotics and other antimicrobial drugs day by day. Some infections are becoming more difficult to treat - even impossible in some cases. There is a global concern that the excessive use of antibiotics to treat Corona patients without scientific evidence of need, will lead to an increase in the rate of antimicrobial resistance to medicines.
The Director of programme management for the World Health Organization (WHO) Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office sends a message that we must work together at all levels of government and internationally, to contain this global threat, save millions of lives, and to preserve antimicrobials for future generations.
