Talking to expert doers about leadership can reveal so many gems…
It shifts the focus back to the people we serve.

I recently had a conversation with a senior software engineer about leadership. When I asked him to join me in a conversation about Leadership he was reluctant at first. He felt like he needed to have been a leader to add value to the conversation. This was far from the truth. Here’s a few gems I took away from our conversation:

1. Somebody could be the wrong leader for someone just based on their personality
2. Good leaders know how to engage different types of personalities
3. A Leaders is someone who is defining or shaping the environment
4. Official vs. unofficial leadership rank
5. You can lead from the bottom → Asking the right questions, following up and giving feedback
6. Leaders bring the weather
7. Good leaders ⇒ common niceties
8. Honest exchange ⇒ honest information ⇒ better solutions
