How to Use a Faceted Business Glossary Graph to Improve Intranet Search with John O'Gorman

Published
Faceted Business Vocabulary for Intranet Search. After our month on the Document & Content Management Knowledge Area, where we focused on Controlled Vocabularies, it is encouraging to listen to John talk on faceted business vocabulary and see the practical and exciting application of the knowledge.

John addressed three problems that we are all facing:
1. Lack of precision in enterprise search (goldilocks)
2. Lack of end-to-end connectivity
3. Data sprawl

John O'Gorman and Dave McComb have demonstrated that there is life after data-driven. I refer to this life as knowledge-driven.
Using well-defined and constrained business vocabulary, we can start the address the above challenges.

I enjoyed the 19 facets that provide another level of categorization from the famous 5W1H. This next-level taxonomy provides us with grouping and boundaries to the business vocabularies that we design and develop. It is helpful to use these facets to identify the type of data that we are ingesting and addresses the data sprawl.

There are several steps to building the end-to-end connectivity: A knowledge graph containing our relational data, connected to our intranet content that provides business intelligence and advanced analytics.

In addressing the 3 challenges above, we have a powerful data foundation that combines:

· knowledge graph,
· relational,
· unstructured content,
· business intelligence and
· advanced analytics.
