A file system provides the mechanism for on-line storage and access to file contents, including data and programs. This file system resides permanently on secondary storage, which is designed to hold a large amount of data permanently. In adition, in order to provide efficient and convenient access to the storage media, the operating system imposes one or more file systems to allow the data to be stored, located, and retrieved easily. Also, through file organization, data and/or information is structured inform of records and stored as well as accessed depending on the blocking strategy and the file allocation strategy applied by the operating systems. Therefore, this video describes the file management techniques applied by the operating systems in relation to file implementation, file organization and file access.
