The Boerne Fire Department is reporting that four people were treated at the scene and eight were transported to local hospitals.
It was 9:17 p.m. Saturday when local first responders were dispatched to the fairgrounds, located in the 1300 block of River Road for reports of the partial collapse of a seating area at the rodeo arena. Multiple agencies immediately responded to the scene, where scores of people had been enjoying an evening at a fair there before the incident.
April Cleghorn and Kyle Szuck witnessed the collapse.
“We were there sitting in the other bleachers, and we were watching the rodeo, and all of a sudden we hear this loud, like bang, and then you just see these people are just like, falling down,” explained Cleghorn.
“I just ran over there, and the two beams were kind of like down on the side,” explained Szuck. “And so me and a bunch of other guys, we got under there and we were lifting it up – while they were pulling people out and just getting people out to make sure everyone was out of the rubble.”
“Considering how crazy and fast it happened, everybody was very calm and collective and just they knew exactly what they had to do to keep it up,” said Cleghorn.
Kendall County Emergency Management personnel, Kendall County EMS, Kendall County Sheriff’s Department, and the Boerne police and fire departments were on scene as well as numerous ambulances from MEDCOM that responded to provide support.
The fair was closed for the remainder of the evening.
“Additionally, the Boerne Fire Marshal’s Office and Permitting and Code Compliance Office will inspect the rodeo grounds Sunday morning to ensure the public’s safety before the fair will be allowed to continue,” the Boerne Fire Department Facebook post stated.
An investigation into the cause is on-going.
