Diabetes mellitus, commonly referred to as diabetes, is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. This occurs when the body either cannot produce enough insulin (a hormone that regulates blood glucose levels) or is unable to effectively use the insulin it does produce. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy. Without sufficient insulin or proper insulin function, glucose accumulates in the blood, which can lead to a range of health problems. Diabetes mellitus is a serious condition that requires ongoing management and care to prevent complications.
