One of the key differences between a CEX and a DEX is their governing structures. On some exchanges, users can only vote if they have a particular quantity of native tokens. The cryptocurrency movement is founded on the idea of decentralization of authority, and DEXes typically feature more democratic and dynamic governance. Upbit, two investment exchange platforms, and an equity management platform are all owned by Dunamu. In February 2014, hackers gained access to Mt. Gox, a centralized Japanese exchange that handles more than 70% of all Bitcoin transactions.

Control comes with the responsibility to manage private keys carefully. The user won't be able to access their money if the private keys are taken or misplaced. If a user loses access to their private keys, no one can help them recover their funds because DEX has no central authority.
