Join us to learn more about Anthony ( Tony) Abbott and his amazing book "Crossing the Komati River"

Why will you read this book?

Tony’s experience is more relevant now than ever. In a world of zero hours contracts and job insecurity, people want to be valued, treated with respect and recognised for their work. They want to feel a sense of purpose in their role, and that their values align with the business. They want opportunities to learn and to rise through the ranks. Research shows young people value these things more than a higher pay rate.

Through his stories Tony shows how to make work a place people want to be, how to get the best out of your people and how to solve problems.

Tony was consistently voted Best Guest Lecturer by students from all over the world during his 15 year teaching career.

The book covers leadership and management styles, motivation, decision-making and negotiation skills, dealing with contracts, unions and recruitment and lots more, including seven case studies. It isn't a dry academic read. It’s witty, it’s warm, it’s practical and it’s brimming with invaluable stories and insights from Tony’s career covering five decades, four industries and three continents.

About Tony,
He is from a small coal-mining village near Barnsley in Yorkshire. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer and MBA who has spent more than 40 years working to senior level in construction, logistics and port, factory, and flood risk management. His career has taken him to projects in Africa, Germany, the Middle East, and the U.K. He has worked with people of many different cultures, religions, and ethnic backgrounds. His work has involved dealing with manyfold problems in disparate and challenging situations. This has given him a rich tapestry of experience in the management of people and resources and problem-solving. From 2006 to 2020 Tony has given each year a season of lectures on Business Management topics at the Huddersfield University School of Business Studies. His students have benefited from Tony’s widespread knowledge, with his many examples of the practical application of both solving and avoiding problems in business. He has written this book, after repeated prompting from his students, in order to reach a wider audience.
