The J-10C is an upgraded variant of J-10 fighter, it is a single seat medium size fighter jet. J-10C has a new air inlet design, with diverterless supersonic inlet technology, similar to the F-35 fighter.

The J-10C also has brand new fire control systems, including active electronic scan radar, advanced optical sensor suite, and comprehensive electronic warfare systems.

Comparing the J-11, or J-16 large size fighter, the J-10C actually receives new fire control systems first, later J-16 adopted similar systems. The J-16 had the advantage of twin engines, and a second pilot, but the J-10C is likely a more price performance ratio choice. And the two fighters work together, and of course work with the stealthy J-20 fighter, gives indications that Chinese Air Force is building up a multi level, multi layer air combat platforms, maximizing the outcome based on its resources.

The J-10C is described as a 4 plus plus generation’ fighter, which entered service since the spring of 2018, with over 200 estimated to be deployed. The aircraft has a relatively short range, but has a low operational cost and less maintenance requirements, boosting the numbers of fighter jets Chinese Air Force can have.

The fighter might evolve to receive three dimensional thrust vectoring engine, demonstrated by a J-10B test bed in Zhuhai Air Show. Compared to its closest competitor the American F-16, the J-10C is lighter due to a newer structure design, and has a more powerful turbofan engine, the WS-10B.

And, in international market, the J-10C is a choice that will free some countries from weapon export sanctions of the U.S., which is a huge bonus.

The J-10C makes use of advanced next generation avionics, electronic warfare systems, composite materials and state of the art radars, based on battlefield awareness data management network.

The J-10C carries PL-15 and PL-10 air to air missiles, which are also used by the J-20. With these two types of missiles, China’s latest fighters with a distinct advantage over Japan and Taiwan. The PL-15 has an active electronic scan radar, has a very long engagement range, possibly 250km.

The PL-10 has excellent short range dogfight capabilities, cueing with helmet mounted displays, it can engage targets at 3 o’clock or 9 o’clock angles. It has thrust vectoring engine to hunt down the latest generation fighters.

It is believed that the J-10C will continue to be built in China, and a new factory is set up in Gui Zhou aviation industry, assisted by Cheng Du Aviation Industry. It might become one of the key fighters in the coming Taiwan Strait war.
