Automobile sales, export-import figures, PMIs are the key data points to track. Minutes of the US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting will also be released

The year 2022 is beginning on a cautious note. The cases are on the rise, led by the more contagious variant. World Health Organization warns a spurt in cases can pose risks to healthcare systems. Governments across the globe are stepping up precautionary measures restricting gatherings and advising booster vaccine doses.

Markets for now are shrugging off the concerns. But policy makers are sounding cautious. The Reserve Bank of India fears inflation and may pose challenges to the Indian economy. “The global economic recovery has been losing momentum in the second half of 2021 in the face of resurfacing infections, the new variant, supply disruptions and bottlenecks, elevated inflationary levels and shifts in monetary policy stances,” the central bank said in the financial stability report.

Indeed high frequency data points such as consumer sentiment and two-wheeler sales are flashing mixed signals. More data will emerge in the coming week. Apart from automobile sales, export-import data, IHS Markit will release the manufacturing, services purchasing managers indices (PMI).

The ministerial meeting of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) will be tracked amid persistent high crude oil prices. Minutes of the US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting will be released.

In stocks the recently listed Anand Rathi Wealth will meet to consider financial results for the quarter ending December 31, 2021. With the December quarter coming to an end more companies will release their earnings. Management commentaries during the results will provide vital cues about the demand and current situation. That will be key to watch-out for.
