Boeing 747-8 Flight management system initial set up

Published
Hello everyone, how do you do. This post is directed at the trainee pilots and the aviation enthusiasts. Have you ever wondered what pilots do when you as a passenger is checking out the duty free shops in terminal, or having a quick bite to eat etc before boarding? Well, one of the things we would be doing in cockpit is setting up the flight management system for navigation of the flight. It’s similar to your car GPS system. Remember that in your car GPS, you have to tell it where you want to go and it will select the best route with the least delays etc. similarly, our flight planning department will select a route that is quickest and also the best to avoid any adverse weather regions, take advantage of any tailwinds etc. This flight plan is loaded into our electronic flight bag that we have installed in our iPads-(lesson to come soon). This video then shows very quickly how we do it. The process is completed by the pilot flying then cross-checked independently by the other pilot in his/her FMS on their side. It also ensures any errors can be corrected/resolved. By the time the other pilot starts to cross check data inserted, usually the passenger boarding would have commenced etc- to give you the sort of timeline on passenger aircraft.
Hope it gives some insight. ‘Chi Di Gin!’ Later!✈️✈️✈️✈️
