Ambulatory seizure monitoring is taking off in epilepsy management

Andreas Schulze-Bonhage, PhD, University Medical Center Freiburg, Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, discusses the new era of ambulatory seizure monitoring, with advanced EEG and non-EEG wearables making their way into epilepsy scientific studies and clinical practice. Prof. Schulze-Bonhage explains the limitations of patient-reported seizure diaries, which are used as the current standard practice to assess seizure frequency and the degree of seizure control with therapy. Under- and over-reporting are well known issues, leading to an incomplete picture of a patient’s clinical state. Wearable devices that use EEG or measurements of movement, accelerometry, heart rate, and temperature are being used to provide objective information on seizure count, with the hope that this data will improve epilepsy management and quality of life. This interview took place at the 14th European Epilepsy Congress (EEC) 2022 in Geneva, Switzerland.
