Published
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith declares a provincial state of emergency in response to the multiple wildfires that have forced tens of thousands of residents to evacuate. There are currently 107 active wildfires burning throughout Alberta, with 37 of those fires considered out of control. The premier activated the province's emergency management cabinet committee on May 5 to monitor the wildfire situation, and met with the committee prior to declaring the state of emergency. She is joined at the news conference in Calgary by Mike Ellis, the provincial minister of public safety and emergency services. Stephen Lacroix, managing director of the Alberta Emergency Management Agency, and Christie Tucker, information unit manager for Alberta Wildfire, take part via teleconference.
