Across the Finish Line: Why Evidence-Based Programs Work

Published
In the second installment of our Across the Finish Line event series – dedicated to conversations around college completion -we went behind-the-scenes of the nation’s most successful evidence-based programs. These student success programs provide wrap-around support services like transportation subsidies, intense academic counseling and coaching, and access to other resources to help students navigate challenges both in higher education and their personal lives.

The event was moderated by Rebecca Kelliher, staff writer at Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, and she was joined by Ellen Murray, Director of the Promise Scholars Program at Skyline College; Jennifer Forster, Ascend Director at WVU Parkersburg; Malika Clinkscales, Associate Vice President of Partner Success at InsideTrack; Dr. Mary Murphy, Professor of Psychological and Brain Services at Indiana University; and Dr. Dara Byrne, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Retention and Dean of Undergraduate Studies at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Our experts dove into the ins-and-outs of what their respective programs do, outlined what the implementation process has been like, and shared the types of support they offer that are instrumental in helping students complete their degrees. They discussed the unique challenges students are facing due to the pandemic like increased struggles with their mental health, students becoming essential workers within their communities, and shifting faculty attitudes about their students. Each of our speakers stressed the impact that their programs have had on, not only their students, but their families and communities as well.
