A new land policy for an inclusive land governance in Niger

Published
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) supported Niger in setting up a participatory process for the preparation of the new land policy.
Based on the principles of the Voluntary Guidelines for Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT), Niger established a multi-stakeholder mechanisms for consultation in order to carry out a land reform process that was truly inclusive and beneficial to all, especially for the most vulnerable groups.
After several years of consultations, the adoption of the new land policy in 2021 revealed a new path for obtaining a more equitable access to rural land, which will be followed by a detailed action plan to ensure that the population can benefit from these measures. This will lead to long-term results in improving food security, natural resource management and community resilience to fight climate change.
