However, people with type 2 diabetes are more susceptible to skin ailments, especially certain types of infections. “High glucose levels in the blood impair the ability of our defense cells to fend off infections,” according to Julio Leey, MD, MSc, an assistant professor at the University of Florida Health in Jacksonville. Both bacterial and fungal skin infections are tougher to treat in people with diabetes, adds Kristi Silver, MD, an associate professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. “Elevated blood sugars provide nutrition to bacteria and fungus, particularly yeast infections,” she explains.
