【Water×IoT】Innovation for Rural Water Supply in Africa【DMS + SUNDA】

Published
Uganda's rural communities have been suffering from frequent breakdown of boreholes, due to lack of budget and capacity for proper operation and maintenance (O & M).

To solve these challenges, new innovative approaches are developed; "DMS" and "SUNDA".

"DMS" (Direct Management System) is a system in which an independent expertized organization provides timely and professional O & M of hand pump facilities in rural areas.

"SUNDA" is an IoT "pay-as-you-fetch" prepaid system for hand pumps, which physically and psychologically enables fair contribution collection.

Result of the pilot project by Ministry of Water and Environment, Uganda and JICA collaboration with SUNDA Technology Global,
 the amount of contribution collected DOUBLED
 caretakers free from heavy duties of money collection
 users enjoy fairness, transparency and accountability of collected money

By covering 300 boreholes, DMS+SUNDA becomes financially self-sustaining. DMS+SUNDA can breakthrough structural challenges of rural water supply in developing countries.
