Degree Programs

This option provides career preparation in the skills needed to manage large turf areas including golf courses, sports turf, and both active and passive recreational turf areas. Technical skills including understanding turfgrass physiology and morphology, soils management, installation techniques, and grounds management are all included in this course of study. Additionally, management and problem solving skills are also an integral component of this option. Graduates of the Turf and Turfgrass Management will be well prepared for entry into a career in turf management or may choose to transfer to a four-year program in turf science. Golf and Sports Turf Management is the study of plant and soil sciences for the culture of turfgrass on golf and sports facilities. The curriculum prepares individuals for careers as golf superintendents at private, daily fee, and resort courses or as sports turf managers at city, school and professional sports turf facilities i. New construction of golf courses and sports facilities has led to a heightened demand for trained golf and sports turf management professionals. The curricula focus is on the application of sciences to the integrated management of turfgrasses for athletic fields and golf courses. Central to this course of study is the dedication to conserve, maintain, and enhance our environment.

What Can I Do with a Degree in Turf Management?

The MU Turf Research Center is an inter-disciplinary effort aimed at initiating investigations, conducting research and disseminating information related to turfgrass and ornamental horticulture. In so doing, the Center strives to further the knowledge and understanding of turf management in Missouri. The Center seeks to provide MU students with the opportunity for meaning, experiential learning and Missouri's turf industry with technical support and solutions to current problems. The current office building is deteriorating with structural defects and needs to be replaced. Fundraising for a new facility has continued for a number of years and we are presently making preparations to develop a site plan to move forward. With the addition of a conference room to the South Farm location, our potential to offer educational programs for students, Master Gardeners, lawn care operators, golf course superintendents, landscapers, sports turf managers and homeowners will increase the visibility of our program and the Division of Plant Sciences.
