The Mississippi Watershed Management Organization MWMO seeks to more effectively engage culturally diverse residents in promoting water quality through programs that resonate with and are beneficial to residents in their daily lives. Students will examine the effects of various land use scenarios on stormwater runoff and pollinator habitat connectivity. Specifically, students will examine possible effects of the conversion of vacant lots in North Minneapolis to alternative uses e. Students will also examine optimal and minimum spatial distances between pollinator gardens.

Environmental and conservation groups are dismayed by the governors of the Upper Mississippi River states for failing to secure millions in federal dollars to address climate change fueled flood issues along the Upper Mississippi River. However, climate change is driving more intense rain storms, leading to more frequent and prolonged flooding in the Upper Midwest. This new reality puts people, habitat, and infrastructure at risk—and communities along the Upper Mississippi are dangerously unprepared. These risks are greatly exacerbated by two centuries of shortsighted floodplain—and watershed—development decisions that are cutting the river off from hundreds of thousands of acres of its floodplain, dangerously constricting the Upper Mississippi River, and degrading vital fish and wildlife habitat. Not only was the water high, but the Upper Mississippi River was at flood stage for over days. Few of our flood management systems, and indeed none of our flood control methods like levees and floodwalls, are designed to withstand these new climate-change fueled, long-duration flood events. It is critical, and indeed, long over-due, that we start planning for the future, in a coordinated way, along the Upper Mississippi River. And Congress responded.

Lutz is its first executive director, hired from the Nature Conservancy, where she directed watershed programs along the Savannah and Connecticut rivers. But her river roots go back beyond that. Although she was born in Los Angeles, one grandfather ran a grain elevator in southern Illinois, and the other was from a dairy-farming family in Wisconsin, so she spent summers near Peoria, Ill. The AWI was conceived in by a diverse group of people who saw a means to develop a multi-sector, collaborative approach to the watershed. Upper Mississippi River States Lose Millions

Part of our local national park — River Heights Park in Inver Grove Heights — is being considered for disposal by the city. Now the park is on the chopping block once again. And the neighbors and FMR are back in action. Now through spring , the 25 metro-area cities and towns in our local national park, the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, are working to identify scenic river views worth protecting. Once each city has determined its list, they must work to protect these views according to new state rules that protect the metro river corridor. Let's help our cities compile the best list possible! Check out the views submitted so far, and then tell us about yours or help by contributing a needed photo.

Through this planning effort we are able to coordinate and collaborate with counties, soil and water conservation districts, and watershed organizations throughout the basin. Upon completion of the plan the State provides grant dollars to implement the highest ranking projects. In February the plan was submitted to the State for final approvals which are anticipated by the end of May.
