The new National Education Policy of India, released in , has opened the doors for a student-centric education. For the first time, students would be able to choose their own courses, study through a variety of modes online, offline, distance , can enter and exit the education system at multiple points, take an exam when ready, and collect credits in the academic bank of credits.

This will enable the students to liberally design a curriculum as per their own interests. The student may complete courses as varied as animation, kitchen management, chemistry, aviation, world history, accounting, music, public policy, furniture design, and psychology. Liberal education at the undergraduate level is commonly found in several universities in the USA and Europe.

As of May , the concept is in a draft stage and has not been implemented yet by the UGC. Still, some new universities, including Rishihood University, are offering a multi-disciplinary and liberal arts environment to its students.

Opening of the fall teem at the country's universities and liberal arts colleges finds most of them still faced with problems of swollen enrollments, outgrown facilities, and inadequate budgets. These and other recurring difficulties are recognized as handicaps to the most effective use of teaching resources and constant attention is being paid them. But of far greater importance for the future than these immediately pressing problems is the much larger question of what should be taught in American institutions of higher learning. Increasing emphasis on specialized training, and neglect of traditional disciplines, has worried observers in many fields and has brought warnings of danger in recent months from leaders in government, business, and the professions.
